Elon Musk publicly offered to appear on The Daily Show if the program aired the interview unedited. The show accepted, and host Jon Stewart said he was willing to talk. But Musk later questioned Stewart’s impartiality, and Stewart said in April 2025 that his attempts to arrange the interview went unanswered. The public record documents a proposed appearance and a dispute over the terms and tone—not a recorded or aired interview.
How the interview proposal began
In late February 2025, after Stewart criticized the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on The Daily Show, a social-media user suggested Musk speak with him. Musk replied that he would do so if the show aired the interview unedited, according to contemporaneous coverage. The Independent and The Hollywood Reporter reported the exchange.
The Daily Show account publicly accepted the condition. On the March 3, 2025 episode, Stewart said unedited in-studio interviews were normal for the program and agreed to Musk’s terms. He said the conversation could last 15 minutes, an hour, or two hours, adding, “I am game.” The Independent and The Hollywood Reporter reported Stewart’s remarks.
Why the exchange turned contentious
After the show accepted, Musk publicly criticized Stewart’s impartiality, calling him a “propagandist” and saying he used to be more bipartisan, according to The Independent, The Hollywood Reporter, and NBC News.

Stewart challenged the apparent contradiction between Musk’s demand for neutral discourse and his criticism of Stewart. He acknowledged that he had criticized DOGE but said he was open to discussing those criticisms with Musk on the program. The public exchange therefore involved both an accepted condition—airing the interview unedited—and a disagreement about whether Stewart would conduct an impartial conversation.
What Stewart said happened after the public exchange
In an April 24, 2025 podcast-related follow-up, Stewart said he had messaged and texted Musk to ask how their teams should arrange the appearance. “And I got ghosted,” Stewart said, as reported by NBC News.

That is Stewart’s account of the follow-up. The cited reporting does not independently establish whether Musk received or read the messages, or why he did not respond. It also does not establish that the interview was recorded or aired.

The available public statements do not establish Musk’s private reason. The clearest documented sequence is that Musk conditioned an appearance on the interview airing unedited; The Daily Show accepted; Stewart said he was willing to talk; Musk then questioned Stewart’s impartiality; and Stewart later said his arrangement messages went unanswered. Calling that a confirmed deliberate withdrawal goes beyond what those statements prove.
