His apology said he had made a mistake and expressed love and respect for China and Chinese people, but it did not repeat the disputed remark or explicitly state Taiwan’s status.
What John Cena said about Taiwan
In early May 2021, while promoting F9 in Taiwan, Cena spoke with Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin. Contemporaneous reports quoted him saying Taiwan would be the first “country” able to watch the film. The remark was made in a movie-promotion interview, not as a formal statement about government policy. CBS News reported the remark; Taipei Times also covered the interview and response.
Why the word “country” prompted criticism
Taiwan is self-governed, while Beijing claims it as part of China. That political dispute makes descriptions of Taiwan’s status sensitive, particularly in mainland China. Cena’s use of “country” was the point that drew criticism; the available reporting does not establish that he intended to make a broader political argument.
What Cena said in his apology
Reports said Cena posted a Mandarin-language video apology to Chinese fans on Weibo on May 25, 2021. CBS News, attributing the wording to BBC News’ account of the video, rendered part of his message as: “I made one mistake, I must say right now, very important, I love and respect Chinese people,” followed by, “I am very sorry for my mistake. I am so sorry, I apologize.” This is a reported translation, not an independently verified transcript. CBS News’ account describes the apology and its wording.
