Paul Newman’s famous steak-and-hamburger line is widely attributed to him, but its publication history is disputed. Later accounts say his wife, actor Joanne Woodward, disliked the comparison because it reduced her to a piece of meat. The reaction is reported rather than established by a verified, verbatim statement from Woodward.
What was Paul Newman’s steak-and-hamburger quote?
The line is commonly rendered as: “I have steak at home; why go out for hamburger?” It jokes about fidelity by comparing a wife at home with steak and other women with hamburger. The wording is often presented as a direct quote, but accounts differ about where Newman said or published it.
Did Newman say it, and where did it come from?
There are two distinct attributions in the available accounts. A 2008 Congressional Record memorial attributes the familiar wording to Newman speaking to Playboy. Roger Ebert, recalling the story in a 2013 Esquire interview, says the London reporter associated with the anecdote did not actually say the line. Ebert writes that the quote was “in essence Newman’s own,” from Parade on January 5, 1969.
Those accounts support attributing the line to Newman, but they do not establish one uncontested publication context. It is more accurate to describe it as a line widely attributed to him and note the competing Playboy and Parade accounts than to present either as settled beyond dispute.

Why was Joanne Woodward reportedly offended?
Later coverage says Woodward hated or resented the catchphrase because its comparison treated her as a piece of meat. EL PAÍS described the line as one she hated in a 2022 retrospective; LA NACION also reported her objection that year. These are secondary accounts, not a verified recording or primary English-language interview in which Woodward’s exact words can be checked. Her response should therefore be described, not turned into a polished quotation.
Why the anecdote does not tell the whole story
Woodward was an actor with ambitions and a career of her own, not merely the subject of a joke about her marriage. In a 1989 Los Angeles Times account, she spoke about regretting that she had not become a bigger star and resenting the attention Newman’s celebrity received. That context makes the meat comparison especially reductive, but it does not prove precisely what she said about the quote.

A 1992 Washington Post profile offers a broader portrait of the couple and cautions against reducing their life together to a tidy public image. The steak-and-hamburger line, whether treated as a joke or a boast, cannot by itself establish what their private relationship was like.
