The Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony unfolded along the Seine on July 26, 2024—not inside a stadium. Lady Gaga, Aya Nakamura, Gojira and Céline Dion performed during the event; Snoop Dogg was in Paris as an Olympics special correspondent, but his performance came at the Closing Ceremony handover on August 11.
What made the Paris opening ceremony different?
The ceremony used the Seine as both route and stage, carrying the celebration through the city rather than concentrating it inside a stadium. The City of Paris called it the first Olympic opening ceremony held on the Seine instead of in a stadium. In the municipality’s 2024 retrospective, the route was reported as six kilometres, with 85 boats, 3,000 dancers and 300,000 spectators. These are figures reported by the City of Paris, not independently re-counted here.
The setting gave the ceremony a city-wide frame: performances and parade moments appeared at landmarks along the river, including the Conciergerie, the Grand Palais and the Eiffel Tower.
Who performed at the opening ceremony?
| Performer | Song or segment | Setting or detail |
|---|---|---|
| Lady Gaga | “Mon truc en plume” | A cabaret-inspired tribute to the song associated with French singer and dancer Zizi Jeanmaire. |
| Aya Nakamura | A medley including her songs and material by Charles Aznavour | Performed with the Garde Républicaine. |
| Gojira | Opening-ceremony performance | The French metal band performed at the Conciergerie. |
| Axelle Saint-Cirel | “La Marseillaise” | Sang from the Grand Palais. |
| Céline Dion | Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” | Closed the ceremony from the Eiffel Tower. |
The City of Paris identifies Gaga’s song, Nakamura’s collaboration with the Garde Républicaine and Dion’s closing performance in its opening-ceremony retrospective. The Recording Academy’s July 26, 2024 report describes Gaga’s number as cabaret-inspired, details Nakamura’s medley, and covers Gojira and Saint-Cirel.

Lady Gaga sang “Mon truc en plume”
Gaga performed the song associated with Zizi Jeanmaire in a cabaret-inspired segment. The Recording Academy reproduced Gaga’s explanation that she wanted to celebrate French art and music and described her personal connection to French people and singing French music. Her statement was shared on Instagram; it was her perspective, not an organizer’s account.
Aya Nakamura performed with the Garde Républicaine
Nakamura’s appearance joined her own material with Charles Aznavour songs in a medley, according to the Recording Academy. The City of Paris likewise notes her performance with the Garde Républicaine.

Axelle Saint-Cirel sang “La Marseillaise”
The Recording Academy also reports that Saint-Cirel performed France’s national anthem from the Grand Palais, another landmark in the ceremony’s sequence of settings.

Dion sang Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower to close the event. The City of Paris and the Recording Academy both identify the song and setting.
Did Snoop Dogg perform at the opening ceremony?
No. Snoop Dogg was in Paris as an Olympics special correspondent, but he was not part of the opening-ceremony performer line-up. LA28 announced that he would perform in the Closing Ceremony handover celebration on August 11, 2024. That distinction explains why his name is associated with Paris 2024 without placing him among the opening-night performers.

The City of Paris summarized the departure from stadium format this way: “A ceremony without precedent took place, marking a first in Olympic history: the Opening Ceremony was held on the Seine, not within a stadium.” The route and landmarks made the city itself part of the staging, while the performances ranged from French popular music and opera-inflected spectacle to metal and international pop.
