Jewel made a surprise appearance at the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2025, performing an acoustic version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, actor Cheryl Hines. She later said her decision was rooted in mental-health advocacy, while acknowledging political differences, and apologized to fans who were hurt by the appearance.
What happened at the MAHA Inaugural Ball?
The ball took place at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., during festivities surrounding Donald Trump’s inauguration. Jewel’s appearance was a surprise. She performed an acoustic version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for Kennedy and Hines, according to contemporaneous coverage published January 21, 2025. Fox News’ video page identifies the song and venue; TMZ’s report describes the event and surprise performance.
Why did Jewel say she performed?
In a video statement shared January 24, Jewel described herself as a mental-health advocate and said she believed there were people in the incoming administration willing to help with mental-health issues. As quoted in Fox News’ January 24 report, she said, “I do not agree on all the politics.” She also said she would try to shape policy and put mental-health resources within reach of vulnerable people.
That is Jewel’s reported explanation for accepting the invitation; the performance itself does not establish that she endorsed every policy of the incoming administration. The report quotes her video statement rather than presenting an official transcript.
