The word “horrifying” has not been established as her exact description.
What McCarthy said when she left in 2014
McCarthy joined The View as a full-time co-host in July 2013, during the show’s 2013–2014 season. In a July 2014 interview with Howard Stern, she said it was hard to speak without interrupting the other panelists and that the experience felt “very uncomfortable.” ABC News reported her remarks at the time.

She also said she did not think she would fit with the incoming panel. That explanation focused on the way the discussion worked and the change in the lineup, rather than offering one sweeping reason for her departure. The Los Angeles Times’ contemporaneous coverage quoted her saying, “God I’m not allowed to be the best of me here.”
Her later recollections described deeper distress
In 2019, TheWrap reported on an excerpt from Ramin Setoodeh’s book, Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of The View. In recollections reported from that excerpt, McCarthy described her Season 17 stint as miserable and said she cried before work: “I was going to work crying. I couldn’t be myself. Every day I went home and I was miserable.” She also recalled Barbara Walters yelling at her and said executives seemed to be shaping her into a replacement for Elisabeth Hasselbeck. TheWrap’s account presents these as McCarthy’s recollections in the book, not as independently verified findings.

Those later comments sit alongside her 2014 praise for Walters: McCarthy had called working with her the most rewarding part of the job. The two accounts are not mutually exclusive; her experience could include appreciation as well as conflict. TheWrap identifies Setoodeh’s book as the source of the excerpt it covered.
She also said the show’s subject matter differed from what she expected
A January 2026 report by The Daily Beast said McCarthy told Katie Miller that “getting through that year” on The View “was really difficult.” In that account, McCarthy said she faced heavy topics rather than the lighter material she expected. The Daily Beast also relayed Sherri Shepherd’s account that McCarthy felt bait-and-switched after focus groups changed direction. This is secondary reporting on the later interview, rather than a transcript of it. Read The Daily Beast’s report.

What “horrifying” does—and does not—tell us
The available coverage supports a picture of a difficult year: McCarthy spoke in 2014 about struggling to participate and not fitting with the new panel, then later recalled crying before work and conflict with Walters, and more recently was reported as saying the show’s heavy topics were difficult. But the cited accounts do not verify “horrifying” as her own exact word. It is more accurate to describe her experience through the specific comments attributed to her than to treat the headline adjective as a quotation.
