Logan Paul ultimately pinned him in the tag-team match, leaving the unresolved story Jelly Roll said he wanted.
What happened at SummerSlam
At SummerSlam 2025, Jelly Roll teamed with Randy Orton against Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul. Paul pinned Jelly Roll after a frog splash. In an interview on Cody Rhodes’s So What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Jelly Roll said he had asked Triple H to let him lose. F4WOnline reported his explanation on August 6, 2025.
Why Jelly Roll said he wanted the loss
He saw it as the right result for a celebrity’s first run
Jelly Roll said a celebrity should not arrive in WWE and pin an established wrestler on a first run. He contrasted his preferred outcome with what he described as a pattern of celebrities being put over. That is his view of how the result should work, not a proven rule or a measured account of celebrity match outcomes.
A loss could set up a return
He also viewed the defeat as a storytelling opportunity. If he lost, he could come back with unfinished business involving Paul or McIntyre. As he put it in the Cody Rhodes interview: “I told Triple H I want to lose at SummerSlam. Just cause no celebrity’s ever took an ‘L’, they always put them over. And if you don’t put me over, I always have a reason, there’s always just something lingering there, I can pop up anytime.” F4WOnline reproduced the quote.

He did not want to win and simply leave
In a later appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s Insight, Jelly Roll expanded on that reasoning. He said he did not want to go out “on top” and wanted the loss to let him “angle in” for a future return. The later interview also adds that he had been telling Shane Helms he wanted to lose before speaking with Triple H at ringside on event day. Fightful reported the interview on October 23, 2025; ProWrestling.net published transcript excerpts from the same interview that day.

According to Jelly Roll, yes: he said he had wanted the loss and pitched the idea to Triple H. His account is based on his interviews, rather than an official WWE statement. The later interview provides more detail about his conversations with Helms and Triple H, while the earlier Cody Rhodes appearance supplies his concise explanation of the creative logic.
