Why JAY-Z Called Out the Grammys Over Beyoncé’s Album of the Year Wins

At the 2024 Grammy Awards, JAY-Z challenged the Recording Academy’s credibility while accepting its Dr. Dre Global Impact Award: Beyoncé had more Grammy wins than anyone, he said, but had never won Album of the Year. That was true at the time. In 2025, Beyoncé won the category for Cowboy Carter, giving the controversy a new ending—but not erasing the criticism that prompted it.

What did JAY-Z say about Beyoncé at the 2024 Grammys?

JAY-Z made his remarks on February 4, 2024, in Los Angeles, while accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award with his daughter Blue Ivy Carter. After thanking Dr. Dre and acknowledging earlier rap pioneers, he turned to the Recording Academy’s record of recognizing rap and Black artists.

“I’m just saying, we want you all to get it right,” he told the audience. “We love y’all, we love y’all. We want you to get it right—or at least get it close to right.” He then pointed to Beyoncé’s Grammy record: “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work.”

He sharpened the point with, “The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. Think about that,” and added, “When I get nervous, I tell the truth.” The Associated Press rendered the central question more briefly: “Most Grammys, never won album of the year. How does that work?” (TIME; Associated Press)

Why did JAY-Z call out the Grammys?

His complaint was about more than one loss. The apparent mismatch between Beyoncé’s record-setting number of wins and the absence of the ceremony’s flagship album prize, he argued, raised a question about the Academy’s own standards. In 2024, TIME reported that Beyoncé had 32 Grammy wins and 88 nominations, yet had not won Album of the Year. She had won Song of the Year, but none of the other “Big Four” general-field awards, according to TIME.

JAY-Z also linked that example to how rap and Black artists are recognized and presented. The Associated Press noted that no rap categories appeared on the 2024 televised ceremony. TIME described his references to earlier rap boycotts and his warning that some nominees might feel “robbed.” His speech challenged the institution’s credibility and visibility, rather than making a verifiable accusation about a particular voter or nominee.

Which Beyoncé album lost Album of the Year?

Renaissance was the recent flashpoint. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2023 Grammy Awards, where the award went to Harry Styles’s Harry’s House. The Los Angeles Times described Beyoncé as having four Album of the Year nominations through the 2024 ceremony. The FADER reported six career nominations, including Renaissance. Those outlets give different totals, so the count should be attributed rather than treated as settled. (Los Angeles Times; The FADER)

Did Beyoncé finally win Album of the Year?

Yes. At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Beyoncé won Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter. It was her first win in the category, and the Los Angeles Times reported that she became the fourth Black woman to win Album of the Year in Grammy history. Her acceptance remarks included: “I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors.” (Los Angeles Times)
