That explanation came from an unnamed source, not Black. In his public statement, Black said he was blindsided by Kyle Gass’s onstage remark, rejected political violence, and no longer felt it was appropriate to continue the tour.
What happened at the Tenacious D concert?
On July 14, 2024, Tenacious D performed in Sydney during its Australian tour. At an onstage birthday moment for Kyle Gass, Jack Black asked him to make a wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referring to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally the previous day. Video of the exchange circulated online. Gass later apologized, describing the line he improvised as “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.” He also said he did not condone violence and regretted the pain caused. ABC News Australia
What did Jack Black say about cancelling the tour?
The Newcastle show was postponed on July 16, hours before it was due to begin. The promoter initially gave no reason for the postponement. Black then announced that the tour would not continue and that future creative plans were on hold. ABC News reported that the remaining Australian dates were cancelled. Black’s posted statement said: “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.” He added: “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold.” ABC News Australia
What was the reported “deeper reason”?
PerthNow reported on July 18 that a source close to the band told the Daily Mail that Black “had to lock this controversy down instantly,” given his Hollywood standing. The report also said Black hoped to avoid tarnishing his film projects and relayed the source’s prediction that Tenacious D could return years later. PerthNow’s report

This is an anonymous-source account relayed by PerthNow, not an explanation Black gave publicly. The contemporaneous reason he stated was that he had been blindsided, did not condone political violence, and had decided after reflection that continuing the tour was inappropriate. PerthNow also mentioned social-media speculation about venue insurance; its article did not verify that speculation, so it should not be treated as an established reason for the cancellation. What was the fallout?
The remark prompted political and public backlash. Australian Senator Ralph Babet called for the pair to be deported, according to ABC News. That was Babet’s demand, not an official government deportation action. ABC News Australia

Did Tenacious D break up?
In a MusicRadar report published January 22, 2026, Gass reflected on the rupture in an interview with Rolling Stone. He said the two had “hashed it out,” described their relationship as repaired, and said, “Jack and I are all good. At the end of the day, we’re friends.” He also called the incident his “fuck-up” and said, “We had to take the break.” MusicRadar’s report on Gass’s later comments
Those later remarks indicate that Gass described their friendship as restored and the pause as necessary. They do not establish that career protection was Black’s private motive in July 2024.
