Fortnite’s conversational Darth Vader began producing profanity and a slur within hours of its May 2025 launch. Epic said a filter missed a variation of an expletive, then reported deploying a hotfix and adding safeguards. The incident showed how an open-ended AI character can slip past filters—and why testing, reporting, and rapid fixes all matter.
What happened in Fortnite
Epic introduced a conversational AI Darth Vader character in Fortnite in May 2025. Players could speak with him, and within hours of the feature appearing, clips circulated showing prompted exchanges in which Vader used profanity and a slur. Ars Technica and WIRED reported on the incident.
In one widely shared exchange, streamer Loserfruit asked Vader about food using profanity. Vader repeated the words and reprimanded her for vulgarity. Another reported exchange involved a slur that can also refer to cigarettes in British English; repeating it here is unnecessary to explain the failure.
Why the character said it
Epic spokesperson Cat McCormack told WIRED that “our filters did not catch a specific variation of an expletive. When this happens, we make adjustments to avoid similar responses in the future.” The explanation points to a concrete weakness: a filter can miss a particular form or variation of language even when rules against swearing are in place.

Contemporaneous reporting said the conversational system used Google Gemini 2.0, while ElevenLabs Flash v2.5 generated speech in James Earl Jones’s Darth Vader voice. Ars Technica corrected an earlier attribution: Respeecher had been used for earlier Star Wars voice recreation, but not for this Fortnite feature. The voice technology and the moderation failure are separate parts of the system; the reporting does not establish that synthetic voice generation caused the offensive output.
What Epic said it changed
Ars Technica reproduced Epic’s statement: “We pushed a hotfix immediately and this shouldn’t happen again.” WIRED reported additional safeguards Epic described for the character:

- Rules against swearing and repeating swearwords, alongside Google’s safety settings.
- The ability for players to report Vader as they would other voice chat.
- A response to continued attempts to make Vader break the rules: he could leave the player’s squad and become unavailable for recruitment again during that game session.
Ars Technica also reported that Epic added a parental control for AI features involving voice and written communication. As described in May 2025, it was off by default for children under 13 or below the applicable country’s age of digital consent, and parental activation was required. That is a report of the setting at the time—not confirmation of the current interface or policy.

A scripted character generally draws from dialogue written and reviewed in advance. An open-ended conversational character generates responses to player input, creating more ways for unusual phrasing or context to produce an unintended reply. Content filters can catch known language patterns, but a missed variation can still get through; making sense of context is a different and harder safeguard problem.

The response also illustrates why safety cannot rest on pre-release checks alone. Players encountered the behavior in live interactions, reported it publicly, and Epic said it patched the system. Reporting tools and session-level consequences can help limit or surface problematic behavior, but they do not prove that every possible failure has been prevented.
The May 2025 accounts describe the initial incident and Epic’s stated response. They do not establish that the hotfix eliminated all failure modes, nor do they confirm whether AI Darth Vader remains available or how its safeguards work today. Fortnite’s current news page covers game updates but does not verify the feature’s present availability or behavior.
