J.K. Rowling’s April 2024 remark, “Not safe, I’m afraid,” answered a hypothetical suggestion that Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson could apologize to her—not an actual apology from either actor. The exchange followed their public support for transgender people in 2020 and came amid news coverage of the Cass Review.
What Rowling meant by “Not safe, I’m afraid”
On 11 April 2024, an X user suggested that Radcliffe and Watson could issue a public apology and “be safe in the knowledge” that Rowling would forgive them. Rowling replied, “Not safe, I’m afraid.” The Independent reported that she went on to criticize celebrities who, in her view, had supported a movement eroding women’s rights and encouraged the transition of minors. She said they could direct apologies to detransitioners and women who rely on single-sex spaces.
Those are Rowling’s characterizations of the actors’ positions and their consequences, not neutral descriptions of what Radcliffe and Watson said. Neither actor had publicly apologized to her in the reporting on the exchange.
What Radcliffe and Watson said in 2020
The reported rift followed public statements in June 2020, after Rowling made comments about gender identity.

Emma Watson
Watson wrote: “Trans people are who they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they are.” TIME reported her post as part of a wider sequence of Harry Potter cast members expressing support for transgender people.
Daniel Radcliffe
Radcliffe issued a statement through The Trevor Project. As later quoted by The Guardian, he wrote: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Why the Cass Review was part of the April 2024 news
The exchange followed publication of the Cass Review. In its 11 April 2024 coverage, The Independent summarized the review as finding that a lack of research and evidence around puberty blockers and hormones had let children down, and reported Rowling’s reaction to it. That summary explains the immediate news context for her posts; it does not make her interpretation of the review an independent medical finding.
How Radcliffe and Watson later described the relationship
Radcliffe in May 2024
Radcliffe called the rupture “really sad,” said he had had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy began, and said he would continue supporting LGBTQ people. The Guardian attributed those remarks to an interview with The Atlantic. Radcliffe also recalled the person he had met and the books and world she created as “so deeply empathic.”

Watson and Rowling in September 2025
In a 2025 conversation with Jay Shetty, Watson said she still treasured the person she had known and hoped people could love one another despite disagreement. She also said she felt a conversation had never been made possible. “I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” she said, as quoted in The Guardian’s report.
Rowling responded publicly, saying the actors had a right to their beliefs while criticizing their public criticism of her. The Guardian reported her response on 29 September 2025.

Did Emma Watson apologize to J.K. Rowling?
The reporting described a hypothetical apology raised by an X user and Watson’s later conciliatory comments about her past relationship with Rowling. It did not report an actual apology from Watson to Rowling. The same distinction applies to Radcliffe: the April 2024 exchange was about what the actors might do, not an apology either had made.
