What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A pause between podcast episodes can come from a gap in the stream feed or the handoff between episodes. It can also be a playback issue: buffering, live-stream latency, or a viewer resuming behind the live point after pausing or rewinding. The title alone does not establish which cause applies.
First identify what kind of delay you are seeing
Notice whether the episode itself stops, the picture keeps playing but falls behind, or only your player is behind the live point. Also check whether other viewers experience the same thing. Those differences help separate a creator-side gap from playback delay.
- A blank or silent break appears in the program, and multiple viewers see it: The source timeline, episode handoff, encoder, or stream ingestion may have a gap.
- The stream buffers, falls behind, or catches up inconsistently: Player buffering, the selected latency setting, network congestion, or the creator’s outbound connection may be involved.
- The delay began after you paused or rewound: You may be watching from the point where you paused rather than at the live edge.
- The pause is about two seconds at a transition: If the creator uses YouTube Live Redirect to send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream, the screen may need time to reload.
If the cause is unclear, note how long the pause lasts, whether both audio and video stop, whether it occurs at the same episode boundary, whether other viewers see it, and whether the content is actually one live broadcast or a playlist of uploaded episodes. These details narrow the possibilities; they do not by themselves prove a cause.
What a creator should check when the program has a real gap
- Check the episode sequence. Review the source timeline or playlist around the transition. Confirm the next episode is present and starts where expected, and look for an intentional break or silence in the media.
- Check stream health and encoder errors. Review the encoder’s status and error messages at the time of the gap. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the local archive, CPU load, and outbound internet connection.
- Compare the local archive with the live program. If the archive has the same pause, inspect the source file or episode handoff. If it does not, investigate the encoder and the path sending the stream to YouTube.
- Check the outbound connection and computer load. A weak or unstable connection, or excessive CPU load, can affect stream delivery. Use the encoder’s health indicators and YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the episode files are at fault.
- Consider ingestion only if it matches your setup. YouTube’s DASH guidance says a failed media-segment upload corresponds to a gap in the video stream and recommends retrying failed requests and signaling repeated failures to the encoder operator. This is one technical possibility, not evidence that your stream uses DASH or has a failed upload.
When the issue is buffering or live latency
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between the encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer. As YouTube explains, “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” With less buffer, playback may be more susceptible to buffering; network congestion and other factors can also add delay. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For creators, the latency choice is a trade-off between responsiveness and playback stability, not a universal fix for gaps between episodes:
| Setting | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive streams | YouTube describes this as the option with the lowest viewer buffering. |
| Low latency | Limited audience interaction | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds of latency; this is guidance, not a guarantee for an individual stream. |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive engagement | YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than five seconds of latency, with increased buffering risk. This is guidance, not a guarantee. |
The figures above are from YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year. If your podcast stream does not need audience interaction, choosing a lower-latency mode may bring little benefit while reducing buffering headroom.

Check whether you are behind the live point
On a live stream with DVR, pausing and resuming continues playback from where you paused, so you can be behind the current live point. If the player offers a control to return to live, use it to catch up. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, with lower limits on some devices or older app versions. See YouTube’s live-stream DVR guidance.
Allow for a brief Live Redirect transition
If the creator configured Live Redirect from one stream to a Premiere or another live stream, YouTube advises viewers to wait about two seconds for the screen to reload. This applies to that transition feature; it is not a general explanation for a longer pause between podcast episodes. Details are in YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.
