Sonic 3 was split because the game its developers wanted to make would not fit on one cartridge, and a promotional deadline meant they could not wait to fix that. The result was two releases: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. The second cartridge plugged into the first, so the two could be played together as one larger adventure. This article covers the video game, which is the likely meaning of the question. The 2024 film with a similar title was not split.
Which “Sonic 3” this question refers to
The phrase most often refers to the 1994 video game for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) era. The 2024 live-action and animated film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount is a single feature. Its official synopsis centers on Sonic and his friends facing Shadow, and it does not describe the movie as two parts. The rest of this article is about the game.
What was split, and what it became
The development accounts describe a single, larger planned game that was divided into two products. One was Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The other was Sonic & Knuckles. Each was released as its own cartridge, but they were designed to work together. Players who bought both could connect them and play the combined game, which is often referred to as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Why the game was divided
Two practical constraints appear in the developer accounts. They did not operate alone, and neither one fully explains the decision on its own.

The release deadline tied to a McDonald’s promotion
Yuji Naka, a longtime Sonic developer, described in interview a planned McDonald’s promotional tie-in and a deadline the team had to meet. The promotion created a fixed date for the game to be ready. Naka’s account places this schedule pressure at the centre of the story, but it does not describe the deadline as the only reason for the split.
Limited cartridge capacity
Takashi Iizuka, identified in a later Game Informer interview as a Sonic series producer, described the storage problem directly:

“The cartridge sizes were limited in space, so we were finding out that not only did we have these obligations to get the content out at a certain time, but we also couldn’t get this massive game that we wanted to make onto the space that the cart would allow.”
In Iizuka’s account, the two pressures together made it impossible to fit the intended game onto one cartridge as planned. The deadline forced the release, and the storage limit forced the division.

What the sources do not establish
These accounts come from interviews given years after release, not from a formal internal postmortem. No quantitative figure about cartridge size or development cost was identified in these sources, so this article does not offer one. The reasons are consistent across the accounts, but the exact internal decision-making is not fully documented in public material.
How the two cartridges connected
Sonic & Knuckles carried a lock-on slot on its top. Inserting Sonic the Hedgehog 3 into that slot linked the two cartridges, so the second game’s content was available alongside the first. The combined experience is the one the division was meant to deliver. Playing it on original hardware required both cartridges, with Sonic & Knuckles inserted into the top and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 locked into the slot.

Playing both games today
SEGA’s Sonic Origins collection is the official modern route to both titles. Its manual states that the two parts were originally separate releases and that both are included in the collection. The manual confirms inclusion, but it does not establish which storefronts, platforms or regional editions currently carry the collection, so check the current listing on the platform you plan to use before buying.
