Salt is commonly placed on an ofrenda as a symbol of purification. A Mexico City government guide says it “prevents the corruption of the body”—an explanation of the altar’s symbolism, not a claim that salt physically preserves a body on the altar.
What does salt mean on an ofrenda?
The Mexico City Government’s Day of the Dead Ofrendas guide calls salt “An element of purification, salt prevents the corruption of the body.” The wording describes a symbolic role within the offering; it does not mean salt on an altar physically preserves the deceased.
A cultural article from Mexico’s federal Secretariat of Culture likewise connects salt with purification, explaining that it helps the body avoid corruption on its journey. Its account supports the same broad meaning while phrasing the symbolism somewhat differently.
How does salt fit into the ofrenda?
An ofrenda honors deceased loved ones. The Mexico City guide lists salt among meaningful elements alongside water, bread, and candles. It also describes families and friends talking, praying, and recounting the deceased person’s life as they prepare an ofrenda. Salt’s purification symbolism is therefore part of a larger act of remembrance, rather than a standalone ritual with one required form.

Does every ofrenda use the same salt or arrangement?
The cited sources do not establish one practice followed by every family, nor do they specify a required salt variety, quantity, or container. A North Carolina Museum of Art resource describes salt as serving for seasoning as well as purification, illustrating that explanations can include practical and symbolic dimensions. The available accounts do not make specialty salt necessary.
