Scream 2 is not rated 18 everywhere. The official ratings cited here classify it as MA 15+ in Australia and R in the United States. The available UK record is for the original Scream, not the sequel, so it does not confirm that Scream 2 has a UK 18 certificate.
Why might someone call Scream 2 an 18?
The likely reason is the film’s slasher-horror violence, but an 18 rating is specific to a country’s classification system and to a particular release. The Australian Classification Board’s entry for Scream 2 cites “Medium level violence” and a “Horror theme” as consumer advice. That supports describing the film as violent horror in Australia; it does not establish a UK rating or its rationale.

The BBFC’s general guidance says that no one younger than 18 may see 18-rated content in a cinema, or rent or buy an 18-rated video. Its guidance also identifies certain portrayals of sadistic violence and other material that risks harm as concerns for the category. Those are general rules, not a sequel-specific explanation.
What rating does Scream 2 have in different countries?
| Country or source | Rating listed | Stated content advice |
|---|---|---|
| Australia — Australian Classification Board, classified 4 July 1998 | MA 15+ | Medium-level violence; horror theme |
| United States — Paramount Pictures | R | Not stated on the cited studio page |
| United Kingdom — BBFC record available here | Not established for Scream 2 | The record is for the original Scream, not the sequel |
These labels belong to separate national systems and should not be translated directly into one another. The Australian MA 15+ and US R listings show that the same film can carry different classifications; neither proves that a UK edition is rated 18.

Why the original Scream’s BBFC advice does not answer the sequel question
The BBFC record available for the original Scream describes frequent killings following stalking, terrorising and chases by a masked figure carrying a large knife. Its advice mentions stabbings, shootings, throat-slashings with strong bloody detail, a garage-door decapitation and strong language. This is content advice for the 1996 film, not verified BBFC advice for Scream 2; it should not be used as the sequel’s official rationale.
To establish whether a particular UK cinema or home-video release of Scream 2 is rated 18, check the BBFC listing for that exact title and release. A classification can be tied to a specific submission or edition, so the film’s rating should not be inferred from the original movie or from another country’s certificate.
