Monica Dutton is dead in Marshals; premiere coverage reported that she died offscreen between Yellowstone and the spinoff. The original Y: Marshals trailer helped spark the theory, but its clues did not prove her fate. That answer came with the aired series.
What the original trailer suggested
The first trailer, released when the show was promoted as Y: Marshals, prompted viewers to wonder whether Monica had died. A November 24, 2025, CinemaBlend analysis pointed to four details: Kelsey Asbille was absent from the trailer; Kayce spoke about losing teammates, parents, and brothers; he wore his wedding band; and Tate appeared unhappy.

Taken together, those moments could make Monica’s death seem plausible, but none confirmed it. The ring could remain after a separation, and the same trailer could be interpreted as suggesting a breakup or divorce. The death theory was an interpretation of promotional footage, not a revelation made by the trailer.
What happened to Monica in the series
The series later resolved the question: premiere coverage reported that Monica died offscreen between Yellowstone and Marshals. CBS’s Season 1 episode guide subsequently described Kayce choosing not to commit to commemorating Monica, placing her absence in the story beyond the original trailer’s ambiguity. For the current spoiler answer, Monica is dead.

That distinction matters when revisiting the clip: the trailer’s silence about Monica and its images fueled speculation, while the aired series established the outcome. The show’s current title is Marshals; “Y: Marshals” was the earlier promotional name.
Where Marshals takes Kayce
Marshals follows Kayce after he leaves the Yellowstone ranch and joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. The story continues his family and Broken Rock connections, including Tate, Mo, and Thomas Rainwater, while introducing the marshal team. The shift turns Kayce’s ranching life toward a Western law-enforcement story, with his military past also part of the character’s history.
