Individual games receive adult ratings when their horror violence includes graphic injury, dismemberment, and heavy blood and gore, and the label is set for a specific release by a specific rating authority. Australia’s Classification entry for Resident Evil Requiem is R 18+ for “high impact horror violence, blood and gore.” In the United States, the ESRB rates Resident Evil Revelations M for Mature 17+. Those are two different labels for two different games, and neither applies to the whole series.
What content pushes a Resident Evil game into adult territory
Rating bodies do not look at a franchise’s reputation. They look at what a particular game shows and how often. The official descriptions cited for these examples point to the same cluster of content:

- High impact horror violence. The Australian consumer advice for Requiem uses this exact phrase, and the record describes horror sequences and graphic violence.
- Dismemberment, decapitation and body explosions. The Requiem record lists these with “copious blood” detail, involving firearms, bladed weapons, chainsaws and improvised weapons.
- Post-mortem damage and injury detail. Australia’s Classification Board, in its 2023–24 annual report, cited the frequency, intensity and detail of violence in Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition, including pervasive blood and gore and the ability to inflict post-mortem damage, as indicators of high impact.
- Blood-splatter and exposed organs. The ESRB’s summary for Resident Evil Revelations describes firearms and knives used against zombies and mutated creatures, with blood-splatter effects and some exposed organs.
- Intense violence and strong language. The ESRB’s content descriptors for Revelations are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence and Language.
The point is not that a zombie game is automatically adult-rated. It is that the combination of violence intensity, gore detail and the depiction of bodies determines the category. A game with fewer of these elements, or with the same elements presented differently, can receive a lower classification.
The label belongs to one release, not the franchise
The examples below are the only official ratings this article relies on. They are not a list of every Resident Evil release, and a rating for one title does not carry over to another.

| Game | Rating authority and label | Stated reasons or descriptors | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil Requiem (modified release; PS5 listed among media types) | Australian Classification: R 18+ | High impact horror violence; blood and gore; in-game purchases | Australian Classification entry, classification date 24 September 2025 |
| Resident Evil Revelations | ESRB (United States): M for Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Language | ESRB listing (current at time of writing) |
| Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition | Australian Classification: label not stated in the annual report; the report cites its violence as high impact | Pervasive blood and gore; injury detail; dismemberment; post-mortem damage | Classification Board and Classification Review Board Annual Report 2023–2024 |
The table shows why “18+” cannot be used as a blanket label. The Australian record for Requiem is R 18+, the ESRB’s label for Revelations is M 17+, and the annual report discusses Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition as an example of high-impact material without stating its label.
Why the same franchise gets different labels
Each authority applies its own classification scheme, and the results are attached to a named release. Australia’s R 18+ category is a legal classification, and the Classification Board’s annual report states that R 18+ material is restricted to adults and that its impact should not exceed high. The ESRB uses age categories and content descriptors. Those systems are not interchangeable, so a rating in one territory does not predict the rating in another.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Edition and version matter too. The Australian entry for Requiem covers a specific modified release on the platforms listed in its record. A re-release, a different edition or a different platform should be checked against its own classification record rather than assumed to match.
What an 18+ label means in practice
The age number is only part of the information. In Australia, the R 18+ classification restricts the material to adults. In the United Kingdom, the BBFC states that no one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18-rated video. That rule is BBFC guidance for video works. It is not a universal rule for video games, and it should not be applied to Resident Evil titles in other countries without checking the local authority.

The consumer advice for Requiem also flags in-game purchases. That is a separate descriptor from the violence and does not explain the adult category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a specific Resident Evil game
- Identify the exact title and edition. Requiem, Revelations and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition are separate entries with separate records.
- Confirm the platform. The Australian Requiem record lists PS5 among its media types, and a classification covers the release described in that record.
- Choose the authority that applies where you live. Australia uses the Australian Classification; the United States uses the ESRB; the UK’s BBFC publishes its own age guidance for video works.
- Read the descriptors and consumer advice, not just the age number. The reasons explain what the rating is actually about.
- Check the classification date. The Requiem entry is dated 24 September 2025, so an older or newer version of a game may carry a different record.
Sources cited in this article are the Australian Classification entries for Resident Evil Requiem, the Classification Board and Classification Review Board Annual Report 2023–2024, the ESRB listing for Resident Evil Revelations, and the BBFC’s “Our Age Ratings” guidance.
