One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA Netflix black screen is usually a playback-path problem, not one universal fault. If sound continues, start with HDMI, HDCP, browser rendering, or graphics drivers. If there is no sound, start with the app or browser, updates, cached data, and network access. A whole television going dark points to the HDMI chain or display, while one affected title may need to be reported rather than repaired locally.
Identify which black screen you have
Match your symptom before changing settings:
- Menu visible, video black: the interface works but protected video is not rendering.
- Black video with sound, subtitles, or controls: investigate the video renderer, graphics driver, HDMI path, or HDCP.
- No sound and no video: investigate app or browser state, software, security tools, and network access.
- The entire TV or monitor loses its picture: check input selection, cable, receiver, switch, dock, HDCP, and display.
- Only a browser, external monitor, or mirrored display is affected: the local playback path is the likely boundary.
- Only one film or episode is black: test other titles and report that title if they play.
Fastest fix order
- Stop playback, reopen the title, and force-close Netflix or the browser tab.
- Restart the device completely. For a TV-connected player, unplug it, press its power button once and wait one minute (or leave it unplugged for three minutes), reconnect power, and test again: Netflix’s device steps.
- Play two or three other titles.
- Check the TV input and reseat the HDMI cable.
- Try Netflix on another supported browser or device.
- Update Netflix, the operating system, browser, and (on Windows) graphics driver.
- Clear browser cache; clear Netflix cookies only when you are ready to sign in again.
- Test without extensions, screen-recording tools, VPN/proxy services, or security software.
- Use a direct HDMI connection, another port, cable, or display.
- Sign out and back in, then reinstall or reset only as a last resort.
Black screen with sound
Audio can continue briefly even when video rendering has failed, so it does not prove the connection is healthy. Netflix identifies device software, video drivers, HDMI cables, display settings, HDCP, and unsupported mirroring as possible causes: video and display troubleshooting.
Check the HDMI and HDCP path
- Confirm the television is on the HDMI input used by the Netflix device.
- Reseat the cable and, if practical, reverse its ends.
- Connect the player directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or dock.
- Try another HDMI port and a different cable already available.
- Test another TV or monitor. If Netflix works there, the original display or its port is implicated.
For HDCP errors, Netflix specifically recommends a direct TV connection and checking the complete cable path: HDCP guidance. Do not buy a cable before trying another port, a direct connection, and another display.
Check browsers and graphics drivers
Try another supported browser or device. Netflix lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, subject to current operating-system and version requirements: supported browsers. On Windows, update the GPU driver using the graphics manufacturer’s software; if that fails, reinstall it or use another supported browser/device: Netflix driver guidance.

Stop unsupported mirroring
Netflix says AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported on iPhone and iPad, and Android mirroring may not be supported. Mac mirroring and Sidecar must be off while Netflix plays to an iPad or external display. Turn mirroring off and use a supported casting method or direct connection instead: device and mirroring limits and mobile troubleshooting.

Refresh the app, browser, and local data
Restart the device, install pending Netflix and system updates, and test again. In Chrome, clear cached files through Menu → More Tools → Clear Browsing Data → Advanced → All time → Cached images and files → Clear Data. Netflix documents equivalent browser-specific steps: cache and playback troubleshooting.
To reset Netflix session data, visit netflix.com/clearcookies, select Sign In, and log in again. This signs you out, so keep your credentials available.

Isolate extensions and protected-content settings
In Chrome, open chrome://extensions, disable extensions, and test. Re-enable them one at a time if playback returns. Ad blockers, privacy tools, capture utilities, and video enhancers are possibilities, not automatic culprits.
If Chrome reports a protected-content problem, open chrome://settings/content/protectedContent and enable Sites can play protected content: Netflix protected-content instructions. For error M7701-1003, open chrome://components, update Widevine Content Decryption Module, restart Chrome, and retry: Widevine steps.
Check the connection
Try another app on the same device, Netflix on another device using the same network, and Fast.com, which tests the connection directly to Netflix. If several devices fail, investigate the network or ISP; if only one device fails, keep troubleshooting that device. Netflix’s network guidance is at Netflix Help.

Fixes by device and connection
Smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and other players
Use the full power restart above, verify the input, then bypass receivers and switches. Install firmware and Netflix updates. Reinstall the app only after those steps. A manufacturer reset can erase apps, Wi-Fi details, and saved settings, so record credentials first: Netflix reset cautions.
Windows computers
Use a supported, updated browser; disable extensions; clear cache; verify protected-content playback; and update the GPU driver from AMD, NVIDIA, or the computer maker. Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8.1 are identified in Netflix’s guidance as unsupported in the relevant troubleshooting context: system guidance.

Android phones and tablets
Restart fully rather than using standby, update Netflix and Android, and test without screen-mirroring features. Netflix specifies a complete 15-second power-off for some devices such as Fire tablets: mobile steps.
iPhone and iPad adapters
Unsupported Lightning adapters can produce a blank video. Netflix identifies Lightning models A1438 and A1621 in its adapter guidance; USB-C cables or adapters should support HDCP 2.2 for the relevant connection. Try another adapter, cable, port, or TV input, and do not use AirPlay or Screen Mirroring for Netflix: adapter requirements.

When the whole screen goes black
Start outside the Netflix account: verify the TV input, reconnect HDMI, bypass receivers and switches, try another port and cable, and test another display. On a computer, test the built-in screen and update the graphics driver. A working menu or another streaming app does not completely rule out HDCP, because protected video can use a different display path.
Advanced browser tests
Hardware acceleration can be tested as a reversible, browser-specific experiment when ordinary browser fixes fail. Change the setting, fully restart the browser, and test; restore it if CPU use rises, playback becomes less smooth, or HDR/4K behavior changes. Netflix’s cited black-screen pages do not establish this as a universal fix.
Temporarily disable VPN/proxy services and security software only to isolate them, then restore protection. Do not install codec packs, unofficial Netflix apps, “DRM fixes,” or screen-recording workarounds.
Use this decision table
| Symptom | First tests | Likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Sound, no picture | Restart; another title; HDMI/driver test | Rendering, cable, HDCP, driver |
| No sound or picture | Restart; update; cache; network test | App/browser state or connection |
| Entire TV black | Direct HDMI; bypass receiver; another port | HDMI, HDCP, receiver, display |
| Browser only | Supported browser; extensions; protected-content settings | Browser or DRM path |
| External monitor only | Built-in display; cable; bypass dock | Display path or GPU |
| One title only | Other titles; report title | Title-specific fault |
| Mirroring only | Stop mirroring; use supported connection | Unsupported playback path |
When to contact support
- Netflix: the problem follows your account across supported devices, or one title remains faulty after comparison testing.
- Device or TV manufacturer: multiple HDMI ports, displays, or firmware functions fail, or you need reset and display-specific instructions.
- ISP: several devices cannot reach Netflix or Fast.com indicates a connection problem.
The Bottom Line
Sound with a black picture points first to rendering, HDMI, HDCP, mirroring, or drivers; no sound points first to app/browser state, updates, cache, or network. Test another title and device before reinstalling or buying hardware, and escalate to the party that matches the failing part of the chain.
