First find out whether the audio/video mismatch follows the stream or happens only on your device. Check the same stream on another supported device or browser, and ask another viewer if they hear or see the same problem. If it affects multiple viewers, investigate the source or livestream path; if it happens only on your setup, troubleshoot playback there. A live stream’s latency setting controls how long playback buffers behind capture—it does not necessarily correct audio that is genuinely offset from the picture.
Is the stream out of sync, or is it just your device?
“Out of sync” can mean two different things: the audio and picture are relatively misaligned, or both simply arrive later than expected. Before changing settings, compare the stream across playback setups.
- Open the same stream on another supported device or browser.
- If practical, try a different internet connection.
- Ask another viewer whether the mismatch is happening for them too.
If only one device or connection shows the problem, start with that playback path. YouTube recommends updating or restarting the browser or device, closing extra tabs, and trying another supported device. See YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting steps.
If other viewers also see the mismatch, that points toward the stream or its source, but it does not by itself identify an encoder fault. Tell the channel owner whether the problem affects multiple viewers and devices; that comparison helps narrow down where to investigate.

Tell audio/video desynchronization apart from live delay
Latency is the time between capture and playback. Desynchronization is a relative timing mismatch between the picture and sound. A stream can be delayed but still synchronized, or arrive promptly with its audio and video misaligned.
YouTube’s live latency setting changes how much playback is buffered. Less read-ahead can reduce the capture-to-viewer delay, but it can increase buffering exposure; network congestion can also delay live programming. YouTube notes that “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live streaming issues, which can delay your stream.” See Understand live streaming latency. Changing latency is therefore not a guaranteed fix for a true audio/video offset.

If you are watching someone else’s sleep-sounds stream
When the issue appears only on your setup
- Restart or update your browser or device, close extra tabs, and test the same stream on another supported device.
- Try a different connection if available. If the symptom changes with the device or connection, report that detail to the channel owner.
When other viewers report it too
Share what you observed—whether the audio leads or trails the picture, whether the mismatch is steady or changes during playback, and which devices you checked. Those details are useful diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause. The owner can then check the uploaded source or the livestream’s encoder and stream-health information.
If you operate the stream, check the source first
For a prerecorded recording or loop, inspect the source before changing live-stream settings. YouTube advises checking that the audio and video track durations match: “If your audio track is shorter or longer than your video, your audio and video may not sync correctly.” This guidance applies to uploaded videos. See YouTube’s uploaded-video troubleshooting guidance.

- Check the recording’s sound and picture together from beginning to end, including the section used in the live loop.
- Compare the source audio and video durations. If they differ, correct the source and verify synchronization before uploading or looping it.
- Test with sound and visual movement representative of the actual stream before going live, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages it displays.
Check the encoder and YouTube stream health
A livestream passes through the source, encoder, network ingestion, YouTube’s player buffering, and the viewer’s device. A fault anywhere along that path may affect what a viewer experiences; a stream-health message identifies something to investigate, not necessarily the cause of a specific sync offset.
Review YouTube’s health messages for audio codec or sample-rate configuration issues, inconsistent settings between primary and backup streams, or insufficient incoming video for smooth streaming. YouTube’s Live Streaming API health guide lists recommended audio sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These are configuration recommendations—not a promise that changing a setting will fix an audio/video offset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose latency for an ambient stream
For a non-interactive sleep-sounds stream, YouTube describes Normal latency as best suited to non-interactive streams and as the option with the lowest viewer buffering among its latency choices. Consider it when you control the stream and do not need viewers to interact with it in near real time. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can increase the chance of buffering, so it is not automatically preferable. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Troubleshooting: what to check next
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The mismatch appears on one device only | The playback setup may be involved; this comparison does not prove the cause. | Restart or update the browser or device, close extra tabs, and try another supported device or connection. |
| Several viewers or devices report the same mismatch | The stream or source may be involved; this is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive diagnosis. | Check the prerecorded source, encoder configuration, and YouTube stream-health messages. |
| Both picture and sound arrive late, but remain aligned | This is more consistent with live delay or buffering than a relative sync offset. | Consider latency and network conditions; lower latency can increase buffering. |
| A prerecorded loop is misaligned | The source may have unequal audio/video track durations or a synchronization problem. | Check durations and verify the recording before uploading or looping it. |
| YouTube shows an audio or video configuration warning | The warning identifies a configuration or ingestion issue to investigate, but may not explain the exact symptom by itself. | Review the relevant codec, sample-rate, primary/backup, or incoming-video guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
