No—not on the night of the first Saturday Night Live broadcast. Jason Reitman’s 2024 film Saturday Night stages Milton Berle flashing Chevy Chase, but the confrontation is a dramatization, not a documented event from that premiere night. A separate account describes Berle exposing himself in a dressing room at another time.
What happens in the film—and what happened in 1975?
In Saturday Night, J.K. Simmons plays Milton Berle, who confronts Chevy Chase in a scene set within the film’s countdown to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. The film’s premise follows the 90 minutes leading up to that broadcast, which aired on October 11, 1975, according to Sony Pictures’ official film page.
The Los Angeles Times’ fact-versus-fiction report says the flashing incident did not happen on premiere night. The film places it in that story for dramatic and thematic effect; it should not be treated as a literal reconstruction of the first show’s backstage events.
What is the separate real-life account?
The Los Angeles Times recounts writer Alan Zweibel’s account of Berle exposing himself in a dressing room, with Gilda Radner entering during the episode. That is a separately reported incident, not the film’s Chase confrontation. The article does not establish a precise date for the dressing-room episode, so it cannot be pinned to the night of the first broadcast.

Why did the filmmakers include the scene?
Co-writer Gil Kenan described the scene as a way to embody the confidence of the established entertainment world facing the young comics. As he put it, “Thematically, it was a perfect way to represent the confidence of the institution of entertainment that our young comics were going up against.” He also clarified: “It didn’t happen that night, but Berle was famous for letting it all hang out.” Both quotations are reported by the Los Angeles Times.
That framing makes the scene a generational clash within the film’s compressed premiere-night narrative. It does not make the Chase encounter historically verified.
