A large Indian audience does not guarantee a particular YouTube RPM. RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share, and it includes views that earned no ad revenue. Geography can affect advertiser competition, but ad availability, monetized playback share, stream settings, revenue mix and content eligibility may matter just as much. Your YouTube Studio analytics—not a universal “India rate”—can show which factors are affecting your channel.
What RPM measures—and why it can be low
YouTube describes RPM as revenue earned per 1,000 views, after its revenue share. It can include advertising, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and its denominator includes views that did not monetize. So a 24/7 stream can collect views faster than it generates monetized playbacks or other revenue, leaving RPM low even when some ads earn a reasonable amount. YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics also uses the term “engaged views” in one section; use the metric definitions shown in Studio when making comparisons.
CPM is different: it reflects advertiser-side cost for ad activity, not your creator earnings per 1,000 total views. A relatively healthy CPM can coexist with low RPM if comparatively few views monetize. Neither metric alone explains the whole result.
Does having Indian viewers lower RPM?
Viewer geography can affect advertising because advertisers choose the places they want to reach and competition for ads varies by location. If your audience mix shifts toward a market with lower advertiser competition, CPM may shift too. That makes geography a plausible contributor to an Indian-heavy channel’s results, not proof that Indian viewers automatically produce a particular RPM.

YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a current India-specific RPM or CPM benchmark for 24/7 livestreams. Avoid treating creator-rate tables found elsewhere as a guaranteed rate for your channel: topic, ad availability, season, audience mix, monetized playback share and revenue sources differ. Google India’s July 9, 2026 statement that Google and YouTube were present in 93% of Indian consumer journeys for discovering a brand, product or retailer concerns brand discovery, not creator ad rates or livestream RPM.
Why a continuous stream does not mean every view gets an ad
For monetized live streams, YouTube can serve pre-roll and display ads, and creators may use automatic or manual mid-rolls. But an ad opportunity is not a paid impression, and YouTube says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Availability, targeting, advertiser suitability, a viewer’s recent ad exposure and YouTube Premium are among the factors that can mean a viewer sees no ad. YouTube reports that automatic mid-rolls were associated with an average instream revenue-per-hour uplift among channels that enabled them compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries, averaged in January 2024. The cited help page passage does not give a numerical uplift, the result is not India-specific, and it measures revenue per hour rather than RPM. Treat automatic mid-rolls as an option to evaluate, not an earnings promise.
Diagnose the cause in YouTube Studio
Compare matched date ranges and separate live-stream results from replay results. A broad channel RPM figure can conceal changes in audience geography, ad delivery or revenue mix. Use the following sequence before making changes to your format.

- Check eligibility and terms. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and verify your channel’s monetization status and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube requires that module for watch-page ad and Premium revenue on long-form videos and live streams, including streams watched through YouTube’s player when embedded. See YouTube’s monetization modules overview.
- Compare views with monetization measures. In Analytics, open the Revenue tab and use the Live filter. Compare views with estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions. A large gap suggests that many views did not produce monetized playbacks or ad impressions; it does not, on its own, prove a CPM problem.
- Read CPM metrics as advertiser-side context. Compare CPM and playback-based CPM with RPM, but do not mistake either CPM figure for your take-home revenue. Look for whether the change is in ad value, the share of views that monetize, or both.
- Break down audience geography and time. In Analytics, compare geography and matched date ranges. Check whether the Indian audience share changed around the same time as RPM or CPM. Consider seasonality and changes in stream or replay mix as well; a correlation with geography alone does not establish cause.
- Inspect revenue sources and stream context. Use the Revenue sources report and compare live with replay revenue rather than assuming every change comes from ads. Check whether viewers are watching an autoplay embed on an external site: YouTube says ads are turned off for live streams embedded externally with autoplay.
For reporting terminology, YouTube Analytics API metric definitions distinguish estimated revenue measures from livestream viewership measures. Studio is the practical place to investigate your own channel; without its data, the dominant cause cannot be identified from audience location or view count alone.
Check content suitability and originality
A continuous broadcast is not automatically ineligible for monetization, but live streams remain subject to YouTube’s channel monetization policies and advertiser-friendly requirements. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified and renamed its repetitious-content policy as “inauthentic content,” covering repetitive or mass-produced material. Generic, repetitive, interchangeable or low-value templated output may be ineligible. Reused content is a separate policy issue.

Review the actual stream and the wider channel for original, meaningful value, and check Studio for limited-ads decisions or policy notices rather than diagnosing a policy restriction from RPM alone. YouTube’s channel monetization policies explain the relevant standards.

- Live ads: Confirm monetization is enabled for the stream and review whether automatic mid-rolls suit its pacing. Manual insertion is another control, but neither approach guarantees that an ad will fill or that viewers will receive one.
- Other eligible live revenue: YouTube lists channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers as potential live earning routes when the channel is eligible and the features are available and enabled. Check Studio rather than assuming they are available to every channel. YouTube’s overview of earning on YouTube covers these options.
- Viewer experience: More ad slots are not automatically better. YouTube’s ad system may skip slots while balancing viewer experience, earnings and advertiser values. An Elgato Stream Deck plugin is one optional way YouTube names for inserting live ads; it cannot increase advertiser demand or guarantee RPM.
