In 2019, her creator, Crypton Future Media, announced a separate Miku software line called Hatsune Miku NT, built around a different engine and a new version of Piapro Studio. Crypton’s 2026 product lineup includes both that NT line and Miku software compatible with Yamaha’s VOCALOID engine, including Hatsune Miku V6, released on April 14, 2026.
What does “Vocaloid” mean in this story?
“Vocaloid” can mean Yamaha’s voice-synthesis engine and platform, or it can be used more loosely to describe a digitally synthesized singer. The claim that Miku is “no longer a Vocaloid” concerns the first meaning: which engine a particular Miku software product uses. It does not mean the Hatsune Miku character disappeared or ceased to be a virtual singer.
Crypton Future Media, which developed Hatsune Miku, described the current distinction in a March 9, 2026 announcement: some Miku products use the VOCALOID engine, while NT products use an engine Crypton developed independently. Crypton’s 2026 announcement makes clear that these are two software lines, not a single product that simply changed its name.
Why did Miku get a separate NT line?
On December 25, 2019, Crypton announced Hatsune Miku NT as a new product. The package was described as combining customized singing-expression technology, a voice library, a software interface, and voice effects. It was built around an updated editor called Piapro Studio for NT.

The concrete compatibility change was explicit: Crypton said Piapro Studio for NT could not load VOCALOID tracks. That separation between the new NT editor and VOCALOID projects is the main factual basis for saying Miku was “no longer a Vocaloid.” It was a change in software engine and project compatibility for that product line—not a declaration that every Miku product would leave VOCALOID behind. Crypton’s 2019 NT announcement described a planned 2020 release; that date was a plan announced at the time, not a current release forecast.
What is known—and not known—about the reason
Crypton’s announcement documents the product and compatibility change, but does not establish a definitive corporate motive for moving NT to a different engine. Without a documented explanation, claims that the shift was caused by a particular business strategy, dispute, or technical limitation should be treated as speculation, not fact.

How the Miku software lines differ
| Product line | Engine and editor | Documented compatibility | Status in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatsune Miku NT | Crypton-developed engine; Piapro Studio NT | Crypton said in its 2019 announcement that Piapro Studio for NT cannot load VOCALOID tracks. | Crypton maintains Piapro Studio NT support materials; versions and support details may change. |
| Hatsune Miku V6 | VOCALOID6-compatible voicebank; the starter pack includes VOCALOID6 Editor. | Crypton identifies it as compatible with VOCALOID6. The cited release information does not establish broader NT project compatibility. | Released April 14, 2026. |
The sources cited here do not establish that NT and V6 project files are interchangeable. They also do not provide a full comparison of voice quality, workflow, or performance, so those differences should not be inferred from the engine labels alone.
Is Hatsune Miku a Vocaloid again?
There was no permanent departure to reverse. Crypton said on March 9, 2026 that its Miku software included both VOCALOID-engine products and NT products using Crypton’s own engine. On April 14, 2026, it released Hatsune Miku V6, a product compatible with VOCALOID6. The V6 release offers a starter pack with VOCALOID6 Editor and a voicebank-only option for people who already have the editor. The official VOCALOID product page lists the V6 voicebank as a downloadable product.

That return to a VOCALOID-compatible Miku product does not make NT a VOCALOID product or establish that projects move freely between the lines. Crypton’s August 1, 2024 announcement had already described plans for both a new NT version and a VOCALOID6-based Miku V6 AI product; its March 2026 statement and April release show the two-line picture in later materials. See Crypton’s 2024 announcement for the plans as they stood then.
The short timeline
- 2007: Crypton’s 2026 V6 release statement describes Miku’s familiar “Original” voice as continuing from 2007.
- December 25, 2019: Crypton announced Miku NT and said its Piapro Studio editor could not load VOCALOID tracks.
- August 1, 2024: Crypton described plans for both a new NT version and a VOCALOID6-based Miku V6 AI product.
- March 9, 2026: Crypton explicitly distinguished VOCALOID-engine Miku products from NT products using its independently developed engine.
- April 14, 2026: Crypton released Hatsune Miku V6, compatible with VOCALOID6.
What the phrase gets wrong
“Miku is no longer a Vocaloid” turns a real product distinction into an overly broad statement. It is accurate to say that Hatsune Miku NT uses Crypton’s own engine rather than the VOCALOID engine, and that its editor cannot load VOCALOID tracks according to Crypton’s 2019 announcement. It is not accurate as a blanket claim about all Miku software: Crypton’s 2026 lineup includes both NT products and the VOCALOID6-compatible Hatsune Miku V6.
