Ina Garten has said that her unhappy childhood was a key reason she chose not to have children. In a 2024 interview, she recalled a home life with little shared pleasure and said she could not imagine recreating it with a family of her own. She has also stressed that her childhood did not have to determine the relationships she built as an adult.

Why Garten decided not to have children

In a September 2024 interview with Tonya Mosley on NPR’s Fresh Air, Garten described a childhood in which her family did not spend time together, talk, play games, or share activities for pleasure. She said she had no happy childhood memories and that having children seemed inseparable from recreating the kind of family life she had known. As she put it, “the thought of having children and recreating that was just unthinkable, frankly.” (NPR, September 30, 2024)

She described her parents as harsh and recalled her father’s anger and sometimes being hit. She and her brother often spent time separately in their bedrooms; family activities, she said, were obligations rather than things they chose to do for enjoyment. Garten called her childhood difficult while noting that she did not consider it the worst childhood imaginable. These are her recollections, not a diagnosis of her family members.

In April 2024, Garten expressed the connection more briefly on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast Wiser Than Me: “I just had a terrible childhood, and it was nothing I wanted to recreate,” as reported by ABC News.

Was the decision difficult for her?

Garten has said the choice was clear to her at 20 and was not a struggle. She had no interest in having children, even though she believed her husband, Jeffrey, would have loved to be a father. She said he wanted her to be happy and accepted her decision: “But, he wanted me to be happy, and it was OK with him.” (ABC News, April 17, 2024)

Garten and Jeffrey married in 1968. Her account does not describe a continuing conflict between them over parenthood; she has portrayed him as supportive of a decision that was hers to make.

How she views parenthood now

Garten has said that, after seeing friends with children, she understands how people can find joy in family life. That later understanding is not the same as saying she regretted her choice or changed her mind: she said that at 20 she did not want children, and she has not described reversing that decision. Her remarks explain her own experience, not why other people choose whether or not to become parents.

Her childhood did not define her adult relationships

Garten has also described making a deliberate effort not to repeat the patterns she experienced at home. In the Fresh Air interview, she recalled deciding at 15 that she would leave a relationship if a boy raised his voice or hand to her. She said she wanted to build different relationships and chose a husband unlike her family. Her broader reflection was: “the story of your childhood doesn’t necessarily need to be the story of your life.”
