The Rock defeated Hollywood Hogan at WrestleMania X8, but the match is remembered for more than its result: Toronto’s crowd turned the expected good-versus-bad dynamic on its head, and people who were there later recalled that the performers responded to that reaction in real time.
What happened at WrestleMania X8?
WrestleMania X8 took place on March 17, 2002, at Toronto’s SkyDome. WWE billed the contest as the “Icon vs. Icon” match, and The Rock defeated Hollywood Hogan. It was Hogan’s first WrestleMania match since WrestleMania IX, according to WWE’s event history.
The Rock–Hogan match was not the final match of the night. WWE’s results list the Women’s Championship match after it, followed by the Undisputed Championship main event between Triple H and Chris Jericho.
Why did the crowd cheer for Hogan?
The buildup presented Hogan as the bad guy and The Rock as the good guy, as Sami Zayn recalled in Sportsnet’s 2022 retrospective. Yet the Toronto audience strongly supported Hogan. Former WWE Canada president Carl De Marco described fans’ attachment to him, while Kevin Owens, who attended, said the audience was what stood out most. Their recollections help explain why the response felt so unexpected; they are retrospective accounts, not a contemporaneous measurement of crowd reaction.

Former WWE referee Mike Chioda remembered Hogan’s entrance drawing an eruption: “When [Hogan] came on that stage and his music hit, they erupted.” Chioda also believed the performers responded to the audience. De Marco recalled that they had to change things on the fly. These accounts, collected by Sportsnet in 2022, make the crowd more than a backdrop: it became part of the match’s story.
What made the live atmosphere memorable?
Former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas described the experience as unusually powerful. Looking back with Sportsnet, he said, “There’s no match before or since that has touched that kind of energy.” That is Korderas’s personal assessment, not a statistical ranking.

He also distinguished being in the arena from watching on television: “I don’t want to downplay how it came across on television, and on pay-per-view, because it was incredible, but being out there and hearing the crowd live … it was insane. It was one of the biggest sounds I’ve ever heard.” The contrast between the intended roles and the audience’s response is central to why the match still resonates.
How big was WrestleMania X8?

Hogan entered as the villain in the buildup and received an enormous response from Toronto, according to people who later recalled the night. Korderas’s description captures the match’s reputation as a live spectacle; Chioda and De Marco’s recollections explain how the audience influenced what happened in the ring.
