Hulk Hogan’s most consequential defeat was his loss to The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VI: Warrior kept the Intercontinental Championship and took Hogan’s WWE title in a title-versus-title main event. This ranking weighs four things: championship stakes, prominence of the event, significance as a career or character turning point, and the result’s documented legacy. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official or statistical ranking.
1. The Ultimate Warrior — WrestleMania VI (1990)
At Toronto’s SkyDome, Warrior defeated Hogan in the title-versus-title main event, retaining the Intercontinental Championship and becoming WWE Champion. The result ended Hogan’s position as the company’s top champion and gave the event its defining handoff. WWE describes it as Hogan’s first defeat on a WWE pay-per-view. WWE’s WrestleMania VI results document the title change; its WrestleMania retrospective supplies the broader context.
2. André the Giant — WWF title loss (1988)
This defeat ended a championship reign that the Associated Press says lasted 1,474 days. Its importance comes from the scale of the reign and the rivalry’s place in Hogan’s WWF-era story, not from WrestleMania III: Hogan beat André at that event in 1987. Their later title change occurred in 1988, during a live NBC broadcast that AP reports drew more than 33 million viewers, which it describes as a record for an American televised wrestling audience. AP’s 2025 retrospective gives the reign length and broadcast context. WWE’s account says Hogan ended André’s 15-year winning streak at WrestleMania III; treat that as WWE’s characterization, not an independently established complete record. AP also notes that some historians dispute WWE’s claimed paid attendance of 93,173 for WrestleMania III.
3. Sting — Starrcade ’97 (1997)
Sting’s victory over Hogan for the WCW Championship was the payoff to more than a year of anticipation, making Starrcade ’97 one of Hogan’s biggest losses by event stakes and buildup. Its legacy is less straightforward than the result itself: WWE’s WCW chronology calls Starrcade ’97 WCW’s most successful pay-per-view, while also saying the main event’s muddy ending disappointed fans. That contrast makes this a major turning point with a complicated afterlife, rather than an uncomplicated triumph. WWE’s WCW history records the title change and its assessment of the event.

Other consequential WCW title losses
The Giant — Halloween Havoc 1995
The Giant, later known as Big Show, defeated WCW Champion Hogan in his first match and took the title. It is a striking upset and a consequential championship change, although the sources cited here do not establish a comparable long-term cultural impact. WWE records the result in its WCW chronology.
Goldberg — 1998
Goldberg beat Hogan with the Jackhammer to win the WCW Championship while his undefeated streak was still intact. That makes the loss a major title-change moment and a natural candidate to rank higher in a list focused especially on Goldberg’s streak and WCW’s contemporary storylines. WWE records the result in its WCW chronology.

Why these losses rank differently
- Warrior: the clearest high-profile title transfer, with Hogan losing WWE’s top championship in a title-versus-title main event.
- André: the most striking end-of-reign turning point, following a title run AP gives as 1,474 days.
- Sting: a long-awaited WCW title change whose event prominence was later complicated by criticism of the main event’s ending.
- The Giant and Goldberg: additional WCW title losses with immediate stakes; the cited sources establish their results, not a measured comparison of their lasting impact.
These are landmark defeats supported by WWE event histories and an AP retrospective, not a complete match-by-match accounting of every significant Hogan loss. No published statistic in these sources measures impact across the results, so the ranking remains an interpretation of their stakes and documented context.
