Hulk Hogan said he began calling people “brother” after WrestleMania I, when new mainstream attention brought a busy schedule of promotional appearances and meetings with fans. He recalled that the greeting stuck because he was meeting so many people that he could not remember everyone’s name.
Hogan’s explanation: a practical greeting that stuck
In remarks from a NOLA.com interview reported by TPWW in 2014, Hogan said, “It kind of started after WrestleMania I.” He recalled flying into cities for newspaper and radio appearances and visiting children in hospitals as his mainstream profile grew.

Hogan estimated that he sometimes met 100 to 200 people a day. That is his recollection, not an independently verified count. He explained the habit this way: “So as I was meeting a couple hundred people a day, the word brother just stuck because I couldn’t remember everybody’s names.”
His account describes an easy, friendly form of address that helped him greet people whose names he might not know or remember. He did not describe deliberately choosing “brother” as a slogan or part of a formal branding plan.

How “brother” became part of the Hulk Hogan persona
The greeting came to be closely associated with Hogan’s public image. An Associated Press profile from 2005, republished in its archive in 2025, described him as “Known for addressing everyone as ‘brother.’” A WWE interview published in February 2014 also shows him using the word repeatedly, though it does not explain how the habit began.
In a 2011 Forbes interview, Hogan described the greeting as part of how he responded when people recognized him in public: “My response is ‘Hey Brother, how ya doin.’” He also drew a distinction between the public character and home life: outside, he was Hulk Hogan; at home, he could be Terry and did not have to greet people that way.

What the explanation does—and doesn’t—establish
- Hogan’s stated origin: He traced the habit to the period after WrestleMania I, when he was meeting many people during promotional travel.
- Its public meaning: Later coverage treated “brother” as a recognizable feature of his persona.
- What remains unproven: The available sources do not count how often he used the word or establish that it caused his popularity. His estimate of daily encounters is anecdotal and attributed to him.
These sources offer no competing documented origin story. They support Hogan’s own recollection and the phrase’s later association with his public image, rather than a claim that it was invented as a marketing catchphrase.
