Cameras caught him in the Royal Box as Novak Djokovic played Flavio Cobolli; the footage prompted jokes online, but it does not establish that Grant was actually asleep.
What happened at Wimbledon
Grant was watching Djokovic face Cobolli in the men’s singles quarter-final on Centre Court. He sat in the Royal Box beside his wife, Anna Eberstein, with Queen Camilla seated in front of him. Town & Country reported that Grant appeared to doze near the end of the first set.
The opening set was close: Djokovic lost it in a tiebreak before recovering to win the match 6–7, 6–2, 7–5, 6–4. The moment happened during that quarter-final, not during the final. The Evening Standard’s match report gives the score.
Why the Royal Box setting stood out
Grant’s apparent doze was conspicuous partly because of where he was sitting: directly behind the Queen in Wimbledon’s Royal Box. Wimbledon describes the box as an invited-guest area for a broad mix of people, including members of royal families, heads of government, people from tennis, commercial partners, media organisations and supporters of British tennis. Town & Country reported that it has 74 seats, citing Wimbledon’s official site.

How viewers reacted—and what the footage does not prove
People joked about Grant’s closed eyes and the contrast between a celebrity in the Royal Box and the tense match underway. BBC Sport’s line, quoted by Town & Country, was: “It’s all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant,” followed by sleeping and laughing emojis.

That joke captures the tone of the moment, not proof that Grant was asleep. Coverage described him as appearing to doze, and no direct explanation from Grant was reported. The available accounts do not establish why he looked sleepy, so fatigue, boredom or any other cause would be speculation. Nor do the reports establish how many people saw the clip or whether the reaction represented viewers generally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the moment became a shareable story
The scene combined a recognizable actor, a royal audience and a brief expression that viewers could interpret in a single glance. That made it easy to turn into a joke, especially with a close match playing out in front of him. The online attention is documented in coverage by TheWrap and Vanity Fair, but neither the clip nor the jokes settle whether Grant actually fell asleep.
