The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man was reported on July 1, 2024—not as a new 2026 reboot release. Some viewers criticized its low-budget look; others welcomed its horror direction and what they saw as comic-accurate design. Those reactions were a split, not a measure of all Hellboy fans.
Why did some Hellboy fans criticize the trailer?
The criticism centered on how the film looked. The Independent reported that one viewer described the trailer as having a “fanfilm, low budget horror vibe.” That is one reported comment, not a consensus or an objective assessment of the production’s budget.
Other fans responded positively to the horror tone or said the design seemed close to the comics. Dexerto also reported both negative reactions and viewers willing to give the new approach a chance. The available coverage gives examples of online comments, not a representative poll of audience opinion.
What is Hellboy: The Crooked Man about?
The 2024 film is set in 1950s rural Appalachia. Its premise follows Hellboy and a rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) agent as they encounter a community troubled by witches and the Crooked Man. ComingSoon identifies Brian Taylor as director, Mike Mignola and Chris Golden as screenwriters, and Jack Kesy as Hellboy.

- Hellboy: The Crooked Man [Blu-Ray]
The trailer’s reception reflects a clash over execution and tone: some viewers saw a low-budget or fan-made look, while supporters welcomed a horror-focused take and perceived comic fidelity. The available reporting does not establish that either view was dominant.
How does this reboot fit into the live-action Hellboy films?
Jack Kesy’s portrayal follows earlier live-action versions played by Ron Perlman and David Harbour. The 2019 reboot starred Harbour; Lionsgate’s production notes list its U.S. release date as April 12, 2019, its rating as R, and its running time as 120 minutes.
The 2024 film was presented as horror, a tonal direction that became part of the trailer debate. The reporting supports describing fan disagreement over its look and tone, but not declaring one actor’s portrayal or one adaptation objectively better or more faithful than another.

The headline dated March 9, 2026, uses wording that can suggest a newly released trailer that year. The independent reports cited here place the first The Crooked Man trailer on July 1, 2024, with The Independent covering the reactions on July 5, 2024. Those reports do not substantiate a new 2026 reboot trailer.
