Helen Hunt’s point was about the conditions on set, not the feelings in the scene: the artificial rain had to be so heavy that she and Tom Hanks were soaked between takes. In a 2021 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Hunt recalled that after a kiss, the actors would walk up the driveway with their clothes squelching.
Why the kiss was uncomfortable to film
Hunt described the rain as unusually heavy because it needed to register on camera. As quoted by PerthNow in its July 3, 2021 account of her television appearance, she said: “In order for rain to show up on film, it has to be droplets the size of coffee cups. Like, it has to be so much rain.” That was her vivid comparison, not a technical measurement of raindrop size.

She remembered the contrast after each take: “So, we would have this huge romantic kiss. Cut. And then up the driveway, you’d just hear squish, squish, squish, squish, squish.” The anecdote is about being drenched by artificial rain and hearing wet footsteps once filming stopped.
What the scene means in Cast Away
In Robert Zemeckis’s 2000 film, Hanks plays Chuck Noland and Hunt plays Kelly Frears. The reunion comes after Chuck returns from being presumed lost, while Kelly has built a life with someone else. The moment is emotionally charged, but it is not a simple romantic reunion.

The film’s production notes describe Kelly’s memory as what sustains Chuck on the island. They also quote Hanks describing their bond as mature rather than conventionally romantic: “These two people are not young or naive at this point in the game, and it’s not a relationship based on flowers and romance.” He adds that they are “grateful to have found each other,” at ease, and accepting of one another.
So Hunt’s “not romantic” recollection should be read as a behind-the-scenes joke about the soaked, squelching aftermath—not as a claim that the scene has no emotional meaning, or that she and Hanks had a real-life romance.
