Harrison Ford filmed a brief role as Elliott’s school principal in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but the scene did not make the finished film. The American Film Institute’s catalog says screenwriter Melissa Mathison later insisted that it be removed. Steven Spielberg helped arrange Ford’s cameo; the available accounts do not establish that Spielberg alone ordered the cut or give a definitive creative reason for it.
What Harrison Ford filmed for E.T.
Ford played the school principal in the sequence following Elliott’s release of the frogs from biology class. The scene also included Mathison, who wrote the screenplay and played the school nurse. The AFI Catalog describes both roles and says Mathison later insisted the scene be removed. AFI Catalog: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Ford’s performance was designed as a cameo rather than a conventional on-screen appearance. Henry Thomas, who played Elliott, recalled that Ford did not show his face; viewers saw only his hands. The scene was deleted, so Ford is not a visible character in the finished theatrical film. SYFY WIRE interview with Henry Thomas, October 25, 2022
Why was the scene dropped?
The clearest attribution in the available accounts is to Mathison: AFI says she later insisted the scene be removed. That is more specific than saying Spielberg personally cut Ford’s cameo for a particular story or editing reason. Although Spielberg encouraged the cameo, the cited accounts do not provide a direct Spielberg statement explaining the decision. AFI Catalog

A 2023 SYFY WIRE excerpt from Spielberg: The First Ten Years likewise identifies Ford as the principal and confirms that the scene was deleted from the final cut, but it does not establish a more precise rationale for the removal. SYFY WIRE excerpt

Thomas said Spielberg knew he was fascinated by Ford and repeatedly tried to persuade him to make a cameo. In Thomas’s recollection, Ford finally agreed to play the principal, with his face kept out of view:
“He finally relented and he played the principal, but he wouldn’t show his face, only his hands.”
Thomas described Ford as Mathison’s partner and said Ford was often on set. His account explains how Spielberg helped bring the cameo about, while AFI’s account identifies Mathison as the person who later insisted the scene be removed. SYFY WIRE interview with Henry Thomas
