Halle Berry changed her planned opening-night look at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival because her chosen Gaurav Gupta gown had a train she said was too large under the Festival’s updated red-carpet guidance. The rules restrict nudity and voluminous outfits that obstruct guest traffic or complicate theater seating; they do not ban every dramatic gown or train.
Why did Halle Berry change her Cannes dress?
At the jury press conference for the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Berry said: “I had an amazing dress by [Gaurav] Gupta to wear tonight, and I cannot wear it because the train’s too big.” She later described the change to the Associated Press as a pivot.
Berry told Vanity Fair that she changed other planned looks with grander trains, too. She and stylist Maryam Malakpour found alternatives and arranged fittings around jury duties and evening events. Berry described the process as a “tailspin” and said following the rules felt important to her.
Gupta’s unworn gown was not shown on the red carpet. Quoted by The Indian Express, the designer said: “True couture doesn’t always need a stage; sometimes, just the intention is enough to ignite the imagination.”

What does Cannes’ dress code say?
The Festival’s FAQ sets out different expectations for gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière and other screenings. For gala screenings, it calls for evening wear and lists alternatives including a little black dress, cocktail dress, dark pantsuit, or dressy top with black pants. For other screenings, proper attire is sufficient.
- Nudity: Prohibited on the red carpet and elsewhere at the Festival.
- Voluminous outfits: Not permitted when a large train hinders guest traffic or complicates seating in the theater.
- Enforcement: The Festival’s welcoming teams must deny red-carpet access to people who do not follow the rules.
That distinction matters: the guidance does not prohibit all trains or dramatic fashion. Its stated concern about volume is whether an outfit interferes with movement or seating.

Was this a new policy?
The updated guidance drew attention because it affected a high-profile outfit, but Cannes told the Associated Press that it had “made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect.” The Festival described the change not as an effort to regulate attire generally, but as clarification that included a ban on full nudity on the red carpet.
Berry’s account explains why she altered her own looks; it does not establish how the rules were applied to other guests.
