Haliey Welch, known online as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” drew criticism after throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field on August 15, 2024. The objections focused on the Mets’ decision to feature someone famous for a suggestive viral catchphrase at a game with a family audience—not on any connection between the pitch and the Mets’ loss.
What happened at the Mets game?
Welch threw the first pitch before the New York Mets played the Oakland Athletics at Citi Field on August 15, 2024. The Mets lost 7–6 after surrendering a 5–0 lead, according to Sports Illustrated’s account. The game result was separate from the controversy: there is no evidence the ceremonial pitch caused the loss.
Why did the appearance draw criticism?
Critics objected to what they saw as a mismatch between Welch’s suggestive internet catchphrase and a ballpark where children and families were present. FOX 5 New York reported that WFAN broadcaster Sal Licata called the Mets’ choice a “gimmick” and said, “It’s embarrassing.” The report also described social-media posts questioning how parents might explain Welch’s viral persona to their children.
Sports Business Journal likewise summarized criticism from sports columnists, including objections to Welch appearing on a game day with children in attendance. These accounts show that the booking decision prompted criticism; they do not establish that all Mets fans objected or that the reaction represented the entire fan base.

Was it a camp day, and were children there?
Contemporary coverage described the game as a camp-day event and noted concerns about children being present. The criticism was about the Mets’ promotional judgment in that setting, rather than a claim that Welch had disrupted the game itself.
What did Welch say in response?
The day after the game, Welch acknowledged that some of the baseball community had not been happy to see her. She said her main reason for attending was to support America’s VetDogs, an organization that pairs service dogs with veterans, and to raise awareness and donations. Sports Illustrated reproduced her X post: “The main reason I went to the game was to spread awareness and donate to America’s vet dogs which pairs dogs with war veterans for a forever home.” The reviewed coverage does not state how much was raised.

What is known about the Mets’ decision?
The available coverage documents criticism of the choice and Welch’s explanation for attending, but does not establish who inside the Mets organization selected her or give the team’s official rationale. Nor does it quantify how many fans objected. The most supportable account is that some commentators and social-media users questioned whether her viral persona suited a family-oriented game, while Welch said she was there to support a veterans’ service-dog charity. Those views can both be true.
