In August 2014, they performed together in Black Swan State Theatre Company’s production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
What “part ways” meant
A PerthNow report published on 30 August 2014 used the phrase to describe the pair’s plans after the production: they would take a short holiday together in Western Australia’s north-west, then go their separate ways. The report does not describe an argument or estrangement. PerthNow’s account is the source for the itinerary and family anecdotes.

The Perth production of The Seagull
Black Swan State Theatre Company of Western Australia staged Chekhov’s play at the Heath Ledger Theatre, at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia in Northbridge, from 9 to 31 August 2014. Scacchi played Irina Arkadina; George played Nina Zarechnaya, according to ArtsHub’s review.
The West Australian reported ahead of the engagement that Scacchi was returning to a city where she had spent formative teenage years. Her connection to Perth made the production a return as well as a professional engagement.

How they spent time together offstage
PerthNow reported that Scacchi gave George a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle of her favourite film, The Lion King, as an opening-night gift instead of flowers. They worked on it in George’s dressing room between rehearsals and performances. Scacchi’s son Matteo also joined them in Perth, and the family took a short trip to Rottnest Island.
Scacchi called the opportunity to perform with her daughter “a real gift,” as reported by PerthNow. George said working with her mother was a dream and that she liked having her mother watching over her from the wings.

Scacchi’s earlier connection to Perth
Scacchi’s family moved from Surrey to Western Australia when she was a teenager. In a February 2014 interview with The West Australian, she recalled her initial resistance to the move and how her feelings changed on arrival: “I came kicking and screaming but the moment I set foot on the tarmac I realised this was something very significant.” That recollection provides context for her return to Perth, but it is separate from the mother-daughter plans after the play.

In a 2023 interview, The Guardian quoted Scacchi describing theatre as “my sacred space” and discussed her later screen collaboration with George in He Ain’t Heavy. That interview offers later career context; it is not evidence about what happened during the 2014 Perth engagement. Read the Guardian interview.
