The Wall Street Journal reported in April 2025 that Musk tried to persuade her to move there, but she refused. A later Realtor.com account repeated that she declined. The story is more complicated than the original headline suggests: Musk disputed the description of an Austin family compound, while a separate 2024 report concerned possible house-hunting in Los Angeles.
What was reported about Grimes and the Austin properties?
In April 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk attempted to get Grimes to move to the Austin compound and that she refused. Realtor.com revisited the account on October 2, 2026, saying she was reportedly asked to relocate but declined. Neither account establishes that she moved into the properties.

The same Wall Street Journal report said Shivon Zilis lived in the gated community with her children. That is an attributed report, not confirmation of who lives there now. The consulted accounts do not establish current occupancy or whether the properties still serve the reported purpose.
Why is the “compound” description disputed?
In October 2024, The New York Times reported a plan involving several Austin properties for some of Musk’s children and their mothers. FOX Business relayed the account and Musk’s response to Page Six: “I don’t own, nor am I building a compound in Austin.” FOX Business also relayed his statement: “No grand family compound/home has been built or is expected to be built.” These are Musk’s denials as reported by FOX Business; the available accounts do not independently settle the properties’ ownership or intended use.

MySA, attributing its details to The New York Times, described one reported home as 14,400 square feet and said two properties had a combined reported value of $35 million. Those are figures from a 2024 account, not independently verified measurements or a current valuation.
How did a Los Angeles mansion enter the story?
A November 5, 2024 Futurism headline said Grimes was joining Musk’s compound, but the article’s text shifts to a different claim: a source told People that Grimes and Musk were house-hunting for another mansion in Los Angeles. That claim does not establish that they bought a home, moved there, or that Grimes agreed to move to Austin.

| Storyline | Location and reported status | What the cited account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Reported family-property plan | Austin; several properties were described in 2024 reporting as intended for some of Musk’s children and their mothers. | Musk disputed the “compound” description. The Wall Street Journal later reported that Grimes refused his attempt to get her to move there. |
| Reported house-hunting | Los Angeles; a source told People, as recounted by Futurism in November 2024, that Grimes and Musk were looking for a mansion. | The account does not say they bought a home or moved into one. |
The distinction matters: the Austin reporting concerns properties and an alleged invitation Grimes declined; the Los Angeles claim concerns reported house-hunting. Neither establishes that Grimes joined either living arrangement.

The consulted reports do not resolve current ownership, exact residents, or whether the Austin properties still have the reported purpose. Treat descriptions of the homes and their occupants as attributed media reporting, not settled present-day facts. The original New York Times and People articles were not directly accessed for these accounts, so their full wording and any later corrections are not established here.
