Green is the usual starting point for chroma key in modern digital production, but it is not the universal winner. Digital cameras commonly capture strong green-channel detail, and a bright green screen can give a keyer a clean, usable signal. Choose blue instead when the foreground contains green, the scene is dark, or spill from a bright screen would be especially damaging. The best color is the one that separates the subject from the background cleanly in the particular shot.
What chroma key does
Chroma keying separates a foreground subject from a background by identifying a selected range of color in the image. The compositor turns that range into an alpha matte: areas marked as background become transparent, while the subject remains visible over a replacement image or video.
Color, or chroma, is distinct from luminance, the image’s brightness information. A keyer does not simply delete every green pixel. It samples a representative part of the screen, then uses settings for hue, saturation and luminance to decide which pixels belong to the background. Matte cleanup repairs unwanted holes or leftover background; edge refinement preserves details such as hair; spill suppression reduces reflected screen color on the subject. Garbage mattes can exclude parts of the frame outside the screen, while holdout mattes protect foreground areas that resemble the key color.
Blackmagic’s Fusion visual-effects guide identifies the Delta Keyer as its primary tool for green- and blue-screen work and treats matte processing and spill removal as distinct tasks.

Why green became the digital default
Digital cameras often capture green strongly
Many conventional color cameras use a Bayer-pattern sensor with more green-sensitive photosites than red or blue ones. Green also contributes substantially to perceived luminance, so camera systems commonly preserve strong green-channel brightness and detail. That can give a keyer a relatively clean signal, including around fine edges.
This is a tendency, not a promise that green always has more usable resolution or that every camera favors it equally. Sensor design, debayering, exposure, recording format, chroma subsampling, compression and the post-production pipeline all affect the final image. Rosco describes digital and HD cameras as generally more sensitive to green, while noting that film-era workflows often favored blue; subject matter remains important too. See Rosco’s DigiComp HD information.
A bright screen can make a stronger key
Green chroma-key materials are typically brighter on camera than blue ones. A bright, consistent screen can provide a strong signal without requiring as much light as a darker screen, helping the keyer distinguish background from subject. That is useful in many daylight-style or brightly exposed setups.

Brightness is material-specific, not a universal property of every green or blue cloth. Rosco lists luminance values of 57 for its Chroma Key Green paint and 52 for its Chroma Key Blue paint; those figures describe those products, not all screens. The same brightness that helps a key can increase reflected green light on a nearby subject.

Green is often distinct from skin—but not from everything
Skin generally occupies warm red-orange color ranges rather than saturated chroma-key green, making separation practical. Blue also separates well from skin. Neither color is safe if it appears prominently in the foreground: green clothing, plants, props, makeup or reflections can disappear into a green key, while blue clothing or objects can collide with a blue one.
Green versus blue: choose for the shot
| Situation | Starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General modern digital video | Green | Often offers a bright, well-captured signal. |
| Bright or daylight-style scene | Green | A strong screen signal is useful when the set and subject can be lit separately. |
| Dark scene or dark replacement background | Blue | A less bright screen may reduce reflected color and make spill less conspicuous. |
| Green wardrobe, foliage, props or set pieces | Blue | Preserves foreground green detail. |
| Blue wardrobe, vehicles or props | Green | Avoids a foreground/background color collision. |
| Subject close to screen | Often blue; test both | Blue may make spill less visible, but distance and lighting still matter. |
| Blond or fine hair, translucent edges | Test both | Reflections, spill and edge detail vary by shot; no color guarantees a clean result. |
| Dense foliage | Often blue | Green is part of the foreground detail that must be retained. |
| Noisy or low-light camera image | Usually green as a starting point | A brighter signal may help, but it cannot compensate for poor exposure or compression. |
| Film-originated or legacy workflow | Often blue historically | Film sensitivity and optical compositing practices differed from digital capture. |
Adobe likewise treats the decision as situation-dependent, identifying lighting, spill, hair and costume color as relevant factors in its green-screen versus blue-screen guidance. A production can use both colors for different scenes rather than force one choice across every shot.

Green’s main drawback: spill
Spill is screen light reflected onto the subject. With a green screen it can appear as a green fringe around hair, color on shiny clothes, unnatural skin edges, or contamination in glass, water, smoke and other translucent or reflective details. It becomes harder to manage when the screen is bright, the subject is close, or the final background is dark or strongly colored.
Spill suppression reduces a color cast; it cannot recreate original color or detail already overwhelmed by reflected light, clipping, blur or compression. Ross Video documents a dedicated spill-range control for reducing background color casts in its chroma-key controls. If the key color has contaminated an important reflection, treat that reflection as a separate compositing problem rather than expecting one global setting to fix it.

Light the screen and subject separately
Uneven illumination creates a background with varying color and brightness, making it harder to key consistently. Hotspots, shadows, wrinkles and reflections widen the range of colors the keyer must remove. Light the screen evenly, then light the subject independently. Keep the subject as far from the screen as the set allows: separation makes independent lighting easier and reduces spill.

Expose consistently across the frame and avoid unnecessary underexposure. A background need not be blurred simply to make it keyable; use depth of field that suits the intended composite, since soft edges and blur can complicate fine detail.
Use a matte, consistent surface
A useful screen has consistent color, a matte finish, little texture and enough area to cover the shot. Purpose-made chroma-key paint is designed for camera use: Rosco says its DigiComp HD pigments provide narrow-band reflectance to make screens easier to light and key, and warns that sheen or gloss may appear white or yellow on camera and damage the key. A well-lit matte fabric can still outperform poorly applied specialist paint; buying the most expensive surface is not a substitute for good lighting.
Rosco lists U.S. Chroma Key Paint in quart, one-gallon and five-gallon sizes, with product-specific luminance values noted above. Its ChromaDrop fabric page lists 6×4, 8×6, 10×8 and 10×10-foot sizes, with custom sizes available by request. Those options suit different installations; the right screen is large and even enough for the frame, not automatically the most specialized one.

Camera capture can make or break the matte
A screen can look uniform to the eye and still key poorly in a compressed recording. Resolution, sensor and debayering, exposure, noise, chroma subsampling, bit depth and codec all affect how much clean color information reaches the editor. Motion blur, fast movement and soft lens detail can also complicate edges.
Higher-bit-depth capture can preserve more tonal information for grading, but 10-bit alone does not fix spill, bad lighting, motion blur or a heavily compressed source. Use the highest-quality camera original practical for the production, avoid repeated transcoding, and expose the screen and subject consistently. For fast movement or fine hair, inspect the actual recorded file rather than relying on how the set looked during shooting.
Software capabilities are not camera guarantees. Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve page describes free and Studio editions and the formats each supports; compatibility depends on the particular camera file and workflow.
A practical keying workflow
- Bring in the camera original. Avoid working from a repeatedly transcoded copy when a higher-quality source is available.
- Apply the appropriate technical transform. Set color management or transform the image as required by the camera and project before judging the key.
- Sample a representative area of the screen. Avoid a hotspot, shadow or reflection; the sample should represent the background you intend to remove.
- Adjust the color range conservatively. Refine hue, saturation and luminance tolerance until the background is removed without cutting into the subject.
- Inspect the matte in black and white. Look for holes in the subject, leftover screen and unstable edges rather than judging only the color composite.
- Clean unwanted regions and protect detail. Use garbage mattes for areas outside the screen and holdout mattes to preserve foreground details that resemble the key color.
- Refine edges carefully. Avoid shrinking the matte so aggressively that hair, motion blur or translucent detail disappears.
- Reduce spill after establishing the matte. Treat reflected color separately from the decision about which pixels are background.
- Match the composite. Align the foreground and background’s perspective, lighting direction, focus, color, grain, motion blur, shadows and reflections.
- Check demanding frames at delivery size. Review movement, hair, reflective or translucent objects, and the final-resolution export as well as a representative still.
Why a clean key can still look fake
Removing the screen only solves isolation. A convincing composite also needs compatible camera perspective and movement, focal length, depth of field, light direction and color temperature. Missing contact shadows can make a person float; mismatched sharpness, grain or motion blur can make the subject look pasted on. Reflections on glass, metal or water may still reveal the original set even when the main subject matte is clean.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to use something other than a green or blue screen
- Rotoscoping can isolate a subject when no suitable screen was available or when the foreground is complex, but it requires laborious frame-by-frame or assisted masking.
- AI masking and segmentation can help with isolation, garbage mattes or cleanup. It is not automatically reliable for fine hair, transparency, motion blur or consistent production-scale results.
- Luma keying uses brightness rather than hue for separation, such as a high-contrast silhouette.
- LED-wall virtual production can provide interactive light and reflections and avoid traditional background replacement for some shots, but requires more infrastructure and calibration.
- Practical locations and physical sets provide real lighting and reflections, at the cost of environmental flexibility.
