Spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen chapters 235–236. Gojo lost because, after destroying Mahoraga, he believed Sukuna no longer had a way to bypass Limitless—and let his guard down. That explanation was reportedly given by creator Gege Akutami at an Osaka exhibition in April 2025. It comes from attendee and fan translations, not an official English transcript, so its precise wording is not independently confirmed.

What did Gege Akutami reportedly say about Gojo’s loss?

Accounts of an exhibition Q&A say Akutami connected Gojo’s defeat to a mistaken assumption: after Mahoraga was destroyed, Gojo thought Sukuna had no remaining way to get past Limitless. One reported version adds that Gojo had let his guard down. Akutami is also reported to have said that “the usual Gojo” might have sensed something was wrong and avoided the fatal blow.

The wording varies among reports. ComicBook.com published versions attributed to Akutami, while Anime Explained cautioned that the answer came through attendees and translations that might not be fully accurate. The event exchange was reported as taking place on April 19, 2025, with coverage appearing April 20–21. There was no official global English translation in the cited accounts. Read the explanation as reported creator commentary, not a verified English quotation.

How does that explanation fit the manga?

The manga gives readers the fight and its outcome; the exhibition answer reportedly clarifies Gojo’s state of mind. In chapters 235–236, Gojo defeats Mahoraga, and the transition to the aftermath leaves the decisive attack’s full sequence off-page. The reported answer supplies the missing rationale for why Gojo was vulnerable: he believed Sukuna had lost his way through Limitless.

Shueisha’s official Volume 26 listing includes both chapters 235 and 236; chapter 236 is titled “South.” The volume was released in print and digitally on April 4, 2024. It predates the reported exhibition Q&A, so it contains the manga chapters, not that later explanation.

Did Gojo definitely have a chance to survive?

Not necessarily. The reported statement is conditional: the “usual Gojo” might have noticed something amiss and avoided the fatal wound. It does not establish that he certainly would have survived, nor does it give a complete technical account of Sukuna’s attack. The grounded takeaway is narrower: according to the reported answer, Gojo’s confidence after Mahoraga’s defeat contributed to his failure to react in time.

Where to reread the fight

For the manga’s version of the final stretch, start with chapters 235–236 in Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 26. That reread can help separate what the panels show from what Akutami was later reported to have said. VIZ’s official series page identifies Akutami as the creator and notes that Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018.
