Martin praised the show-added dog who appears with ratcatcher Cheese in “Rhaenyra the Cruel.” In a July 5, 2024 post, he said the dog’s brief, silent presence made Cheese feel more human—and admitted, “I wish I’d thought of that dog.”
What is the poignant dog scene?
Spoiler warning for “Rhaenyra the Cruel.” Cheese kicks a dog, a moment that makes Martin say he was prepared to hate the ratcatcher but hated him more after seeing the cruelty. Later, the dog sits at Cheese’s feet and looks up at him. Martin wrote that the image “damn near broke my heart.”
In his July 5, 2024 post, “Blood, Cheese, and Grief”, Martin says the show added the dog. He describes its quiet presence as a reminder that even “the worst of men” can love and be loved.
Why did Martin praise an addition to his story?
Martin writes that he is “not usually a fan of screenwriters adding characters to the source material,” particularly when adapting his own work. The dog won him over because it changes the emotional texture of the scene without undoing Cheese’s cruelty. The kick intensifies Martin’s dislike of him; the later image of the dog beside him suggests a capacity for attachment.

That is a shift in how Martin reads the character, not a declaration that Cheese is redeemed. The dog gives him a small measure of humanity, but does not excuse what he has done. Martin’s verdict on the addition is unequivocal: “I wish I’d thought of that dog. I didn’t, but someone else did. I am glad of that.”
Is the dog in Fire & Blood?
No. Martin identifies Fire & Blood as the source material for House of the Dragon, but says the dog was added for the television adaptation. It is therefore a show-specific detail, not a scene to look for in the book.
