Why did Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin miss the sequel?
Burton’s stated reason was the story he wanted to tell. In an interview with Vanity Fair published August 29, 2024, he said, “I think the thing was for me I didn’t want to just tick any boxes.” He described the sequel’s focus as three generations of mothers, daughters and granddaughters—the nucleus of the film—and said that story was his hook for making it. Vanity Fair’s report on Burton’s explanation attributes the choice to his creative direction, not to a disclosed dispute or a specific casting obstacle.

The sequel instead follows the Deetz family across three generations: Lydia, her daughter Astrid and Lydia’s stepmother Delia. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis says that after a family tragedy they return to Winter River, where Astrid discovers the town model and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis also identifies returning cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, alongside Jenna Ortega as Astrid.
What happened to Adam and Barbara in the story?
The movie gives the Maitlands a short, in-story exit. When Astrid asks about them, Lydia says they found a loophole and moved on. The film does not explain what the loophole was or how they moved on; TheWrap’s account of the explanation notes that the detail is left unresolved.

Their absence stands out because the sequel returns to the Maitlands’ house and its model town, central locations from the original film. But the plot’s loophole and Burton’s casting rationale answer different questions: Lydia’s line explains the characters’ status in the story, while Burton’s interview explains why the sequel does not bring the actors back.
What did Geena Davis say about not returning?
In an April 11, 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Davis confirmed she was not in the sequel and joked about why: “Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age… Not that I have.” She also said the characters were stuck looking as they did when they died. That was Davis’s humorous theory about the characters, not Burton’s explanation for the casting decision. Entertainment Tonight’s interview report includes her remarks.

What is—and isn’t—established about Baldwin’s absence?
Burton’s comments address the decision not to bring back the Maitlands as part of a story with a different focus. The available explanations do not establish whether Baldwin was individually asked, declined, or was affected by a particular contract or production constraint. It is more accurate to distinguish Burton’s stated creative rationale from unreported details about either actor’s casting.
