Why Geena Davis & Alec Baldwin Aren’t in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Burton says he wanted a three-generation Deetz story rather than returning every original cast member. Davis offered her own ghost-aging theory, and the film gives the Maitlands a loophole ending.

Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are not in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 2024 sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 film, because Burton chose to tell a story about three generations of the Deetz family rather than bring back every original character. Davis has also given a separate, personal theory about why she was not asked back, and the film itself gives Barbara and Adam Maitland an offscreen fate. These are three different explanations, and they are easy to blur together.

What the director said

The clearest official-sounding reason comes from Burton himself. In an interview with People, reported by Vanity Fair’s Savannah Walsh on August 29, 2024, he said:

“I think the thing was for me I didn’t want to just tick any boxes.”

He followed that with: “So even though they were such an amazing, integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else.”

Burton’s point is about creative direction. He was not describing a legal dispute, a scheduling conflict, or a financial negotiation. The original Davis and Baldwin roles were central to the 1988 film: Barbara and Adam Maitland are a recently deceased couple whose spirits are confined to their former Connecticut home, and they clash with the Deetz family and summon Beetlejuice. Burton’s view was that bringing them back for the sake of recognition would not serve the new film.

The story Burton wanted to tell

Burton described the sequel’s hook in terms of family rather than the original ghosts: “That was my hook into it, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the nucleus of it.”

The official synopsis from Warner Bros. follows the same structure. Three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River after a family tragedy. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara return, and Jenna Ortega plays Lydia’s daughter Astrid. In the story, Astrid discovers the town model and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife.

Burton also said a sequel of this kind “really had to do with the time,” which is a comment on why the film was made now rather than on the cast. The reporting reviewed for this article does not include a separate statement from Baldwin about the decision.

Geena Davis’s own explanation

Davis addressed the question directly in April 2024, when Entertainment Tonight’s Hope Sloop interviewed her at CinemaCon (reported April 11, 2024). Asked whether she was returning, she said: “No, I’m not. I’m not in the remake.”

She then offered her own theory, which is not a production statement: “Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age… Not that I have.”

That line is a joke about the logic of the franchise, not a reason given by Burton or the studio. It is best read as Davis’s speculation about why the Maitlands were not written back in.

What happens to the Maitlands in the film

The sequel does give the couple an in-world ending. In the film, Astrid asks what happened to the ghosts Lydia knew as a teenager. Lydia answers that they “found a loophole and moved on to the next plane,” as Vanity Fair reports the dialogue. That wording comes from the outlet’s account of the film, not from a verified line transcript, so treat the phrase as a reported plot detail rather than a confirmed quotation.

The loophole explanation tells viewers what happened to the characters. It does not tell them why the actors were not cast, and it should not be read as a production decision.

The sequel’s title and release

The film’s official title is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, not “Beetlejuice 2.” Warner Bros.’ official film site gives the U.S. release date as September 6, 2024, with international release beginning September 4, 2024. These are historical dates for a film that is already out.
