Gabe Newell arranged for a custom Half-Life-inspired garden gnome to fly aboard Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket on 20 November 2020. Gnome Chompski was both a tribute to the game’s “Little Rocket Man” achievement and an engineering test article; Newell also pledged money to a children’s hospital for each person who watched the launch webcast.
Why did Gabe Newell send a garden gnome into space?
The launch combined three purposes rather than serving a single one: a Half-Life reference, a test of titanium additive manufacturing, and a charitable pledge tied to the webcast audience. Rocket Lab’s announcement described the object as a mass simulator and said the mission would test and qualify a novel 3D-printing technique with possible future use in spacecraft components. The available accounts establish those stated purposes, but not which one Newell personally considered primary.
A real-world version of a game achievement
Gnome Chompski was a nod to “Little Rocket Man” in Half-Life 2: Episode Two. In the game, players carry a gnome through much of the campaign and put it into a rocket. Rocket Lab identified the figure as a tribute to that achievement, which GeekWire also described as the source of the gnome’s notoriety. Rocket Lab’s pre-launch announcement and GeekWire’s contemporaneous account connect the game reference to the flight.
An engineering test as well as a passenger
The figure was not simply a loose ornament placed among the satellites. Rocket Lab said its purpose included acting as a mass simulator while the company tested a titanium additive-manufacturing process for potential spacecraft applications. That stated test purpose does not establish that the technique later produced a particular spacecraft component.

A pledge for Starship Children’s Hospital
Newell pledged one dollar for each person who watched the launch webcast, with the money designated for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. GeekWire reported that Newell had remained in New Zealand after the country closed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic, and attributed to Valve the explanation that he wanted to help “the economy and the community that sheltered him.” That is reported context, not evidence about Newell’s private motives. GeekWire’s report also quoted Valve joking that the money might someday help achieve Newell’s “ultimate dream” of launching a children’s hospital into space, though the immediate use would be more practical hospital-related purposes.
What exactly flew on Rocket Lab’s Electron?
Rocket Lab launched Gnome Chompski on its “Return to Sender” Electron mission from Māhia, New Zealand, on 20 November 2020. The custom figure was 150 mm (about 5.9 inches) tall, made of titanium using additive manufacturing with Wētā Workshop, and attached to Electron’s Kick Stage. Rocket Lab reported that the mission deployed 30 satellites; that is mission context, not a measure of the gnome’s contribution. The company’s post-launch account described the flight and the Kick Stage payload.

What happened to Gnome Chompski after launch?
Rocket Lab said the gnome would remain attached to the Kick Stage through the mission and de-orbit with it. The company expected the stage to burn up during re-entry, so the figure was not intended to return to Earth. It was a custom mission article, not a satellite with an independent mission.
