Forbes’s November 2023 “30 Under 30” issue called Bad Bunny “El Rey de Pop” (“King of Pop”) on its cover. Some Michael Jackson fans objected to the phrase because they associate the honorific with Jackson; other critics questioned whether broad pop wording captured Bad Bunny’s Latino urbano and reggaetón identity. The cover used Forbes’s wording—not a title Bad Bunny was reported to have claimed in his interview.
What did the Forbes cover say?
The phrase on the cover was “El Rey de Pop,” translated in contemporaneous coverage as “King of Pop.” The dispute surfaced in late November 2023 around Forbes’s 30 Under 30 issue. It was editorial cover language; the available reporting does not establish that Forbes formally awarded or transferred an official title.
Why did some fans object?
The title’s association with Michael Jackson
Some fans objected because “King of Pop” is closely associated with Michael Jackson. They regarded Forbes’s wording as an unwelcome comparison or challenge to that legacy. These were reported reactions, not evidence of a consensus among Jackson fans or the wider public.
Questions about genre
Other objections concerned categorization. Critics argued that describing Bad Bunny simply as pop could flatten the more specific Latino urbano and reggaetón context of his music. The reporting documents that this argument appeared, but it does not resolve the subjective question of which label best describes his work.

Did Bad Bunny call himself the King of Pop?
No such claim was reported in the contemporaneous account of his Forbes interview. “El Rey de Pop” was the magazine’s cover framing. People en Español reproduced Bad Bunny saying, “El español es parte de mí, está en mi ADN” (“Spanish is part of me; it’s in my DNA”) while discussing language and identity—not the cover controversy. People en Español’s 2023 coverage also reported that Forbes cited 35.9 billion Spotify streams over the preceding three years and more than 32 billion YouTube views. Those are historical figures attributed to Forbes in 2023, not current totals or independently verified metrics.

Entertainment coverage reproduced social-media comments, including one objection asking whether Bad Bunny had the talent, impact, and global reach to merit the title and disputing that he was a pop artist. Such examples show the kinds of criticism circulating; they do not measure how many people agreed. The available contemporaneous coverage also does not establish a direct Forbes response to the backlash.

- OASIS, the collaborative album between J Balvin and Bad Bunny, was released in 2019 and features the singles, "Que Pretendes," "La Cancion," "Yo Le Llego," and "Cuidao por Ahi
The disagreement turns on two different interpretations: whether the phrase was meant as a descriptive shorthand for Bad Bunny’s success or as an honorific traditionally tied to Jackson, and whether “pop” is sufficiently precise for Bad Bunny’s genre. Forbes’s cover prompted those readings, but the reported reactions do not settle either debate.
