Why FFmpeg Repeats the First Frame When Looping a Meditation Video

A first frame at the end of each pass may be normal. A frame repeating inside the clip can point to FFmpeg’s loop filter or input setup.

Most often, FFmpeg is doing what the chosen loop setting asks: -stream_loop restarts the entire input, so playback returns to the clip’s first frame at the end of each pass. But if the first frame repeats within the clip, check for a loop video filter buffering just one frame—especially size=1:start=0. The exact command and where the repeat occurs determine which explanation fits.

First identify where the frame repeats

Does the first frame appear again only after the video reaches its end, or does it freeze or recur before the end? A restart at the end of a complete pass can be normal whole-input looping. A repeat within a pass points to a filter, input setup, or another part of the command that needs inspection.

  • Only at the end: inspect the loop boundary and confirm that repeating the whole clip is intended.
  • Within the clip: look for a frame-based loop filter and check its settings and position in the filter graph.

Whole-input looping with -stream_loop

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: 0 means no looping and -1 means infinite looping. Place it before the -i for the input you want to repeat:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4 ...

With this option, FFmpeg repeats the input stream as a whole. The opening frame appearing again at the end of a pass is therefore expected. If it appears repeatedly before the pass ends, inspect the rest of the command rather than assuming -stream_loop alone explains it. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Frame-based looping with the loop filter

The video loop filter repeats buffered frames; it does not mean the same thing as restarting the complete input. Its size setting controls the maximum number of buffered frames, while start selects the first frame of the loop. Both default to zero. The official example loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 loops just the first frame forever.

Search the complete filter graph for loop=. If you find a one-frame buffer starting at frame zero, that is a direct explanation for a repeated opening frame. Remove or adjust the filter only after confirming which stream it affects and whether you intend to repeat one frame, a section, or the full clip. The appropriate buffer depends on that goal; changing it blindly can produce a different unintended loop. See the FFmpeg video filter documentation.

Check what kind of input you are looping

Encoded video

For an MP4 or another encoded clip, determine whether the command repeats the whole input with -stream_loop, applies a frame-based filter, or combines both. These mechanisms have different scopes.

Image sequence

Numbered images use FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer, which has a separate input loop option that is disabled by default. The documentation gives its default frame rate as 25 fps. Check whether FFmpeg is reading a single still or a numbered sequence, and inspect the image-sequence settings rather than treating them as an encoded video loop. See the FFmpeg image2 documentation.

Concat list

If the input is a concat list, the concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each listed file begins where the preceding one ends. The files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate stored durations can cause artifacts. Check the files’ stream compatibility and duration metadata if a repeated or misplaced image appears around a join. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check whether the loop point itself looks abrupt

A technically valid whole-clip loop can still look like a freeze or jump when the final image changes sharply back to the opening image. Compare the decoded last and first frames. For meditation footage, a locked camera, still landscape, slower movement, or deliberate crossfade may make the transition less noticeable, but judge the actual footage at the boundary. This is an editing issue, not by itself evidence of an FFmpeg defect.

Troubleshooting sequence

  1. Locate the repeat. Note whether it happens only at the end of a full pass or within the clip.
  2. Read the full command. Check whether -stream_loop is before the relevant -i. If so, it applies to that input.
  3. Inspect the filters. Search for loop=; check size, start, and loop count, and identify the stream being filtered.
  4. Identify the input path. Determine whether the command reads an encoded video, an image sequence, or a concat list. Check the corresponding demuxer settings and, for concat, stream compatibility and stored durations.
  5. Compare the boundary images. If the repetition happens only at the pass boundary, inspect the last-to-first transition and edit the loop point or footage if needed.
  6. Gather details if it remains unexplained. Include the complete command, FFmpeg version, input stream details, and when the repeat occurs. Without those details or the media itself, the specific cause cannot be determined.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the finished meditation video is meant to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo can loop an uploaded video from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
