Apple’s first Friday Night Baseball broadcast on April 8, 2022, drew a genuinely negative reaction from many vocal viewers, but “slaughtered by furious fans” was editorial shorthand—not a measured verdict from every baseball audience. Complaints centered on distracting commentary, reported access and stream problems, and the shock of moving a familiar baseball night onto a new streaming service. Apple did not abandon MLB: Friday Night Baseball entered its fifth season in 2026.
What happened on opening night?
On Friday, April 8, 2022, Apple TV+ carried its first live Major League Baseball production: a doubleheader featuring the New York Mets at the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros at the Los Angeles Angels. Apple and MLB had announced the package the previous month as a weekly Friday doubleheader with live pregame and postgame programming, initially in eight countries (Apple’s launch announcement).
This was not simply a conventional cable simulcast. Apple and MLB supplied their own graphics, studio elements, camera choices and announcing teams, asking viewers accustomed to local channels, ESPN, Fox, MLB Network or regional sports networks to find a game inside a streaming app and sign in with an Apple Account.
The headline came from an iMore article published April 9, 2022, which documented the opening-night reaction (iMore’s report).

Why did viewers react so negatively?
The commentary became the main story
The strongest criticism was directed at the announcers. Viewers said conversations wandered away from the live action into subjects such as Apple products, food, pets and sunglasses. Others felt the voices sounded inexperienced or emotionally out of step with important plays, talked over the game, or offered too little baseball analysis when the moment demanded it.
Those are documented viewer complaints, not an objective finding that every announcer was incompetent. The defensible conclusion is that many vocal fans found the debut’s commentary distracting, unfamiliar and insufficiently focused on baseball.
Some viewers struggled to watch at all
Viewers reported crashes, connection failures, login and Apple Account problems, device-specific access trouble and confusion about where the game appeared in the Apple TV app. Outage-report spikes and social posts show that some people had trouble; they do not prove a service-wide outage without a formal Apple or MLB incident report.

Access friction was itself part of the controversy. A game that normally appeared on a familiar channel now required a compatible streaming route, an Apple Account and uncertainty about whether a subscription was necessary. That distribution change affected the experience independently of announcing quality.

The visual style divided baseball viewers
Apple used a minimalist scorebug and cleaner presentation than many traditional sports broadcasts. Fans who prefer constant sponsor graphics and familiar broadcast conventions found the design different; others welcomed less clutter, probability and strike-zone information, cinematic camera angles and a more modern identity.
It looked sharp, but that did not make it native 4K
Some viewers described the picture as 4K-like. The technical reporting cited for the debut identified a 1080p, 60fps stream at approximately 8 Mbps, not a native 4K feed. A compatible television can upscale 1080p, and smooth motion or strong image processing can make a stream look sharper than its source resolution.

How strong was the “fans hated it” evidence?
The reaction was clearly negative online, but it was not measured through a representative audience study. The available evidence consisted mainly of social-media posts, Reddit discussion and an informal fan poll reported as having nearly 4,000 votes. In that poll, 64.6% gave the broadcast an F and 4.3% gave it an A.
That poll was self-selected: people motivated to vote or post are not a random sample of everyone watching. “Many vocal fans criticized the debut” is supported; “all fans hated it” and “the broadcast objectively failed” are not.

- Minimalist graphics and a clean score presentation.
- Probability and strike-zone information integrated into the viewing experience.
- Cinematic camera angles and generally smooth motion.
- A sharp-looking picture, even though the reported source was 1080p rather than native 4K.
- Less advertising clutter than viewers often see on conventional sports broadcasts.
For some viewers, Apple’s uncluttered visual language was the point: it made the game feel less like a stack of sponsor elements and more like a focused streaming production. For others, the new style could not compensate for commentary they found intrusive.

Did Apple improve, or did it give up?
Apple did not end the experiment. Friday Night Baseball continued as a weekly doubleheader and reached a fifth season in 2026. Later Apple announcements describe enhanced production and expert commentary, but continued seasons alone do not prove that every 2022 complaint disappeared.
Documented changes after the debut
- Apple’s 2025 announcements expanded access to the Apple TV app on Android mobile devices and allowed Prime Video customers in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada to add Apple TV+ through Prime Video.
- Later production details included 5.1 audio with Spatial Audio enabled, player and field-level microphones, and local-radio listening options in specified circumstances for fans in the United States and Canada.
- Apple also identified broader device and subscription endpoints in its 2026 announcement.
These changes address reach and production options, but they are not proof that every viewer now prefers Apple’s national presentation to a local crew.

As of August 18, 2026, the package is active during the 2026 regular season. Apple announced the fifth season began March 27, 2026, with weekly doubleheaders. In the United States, Apple listed a price of $12.99 per month and a seven-day free trial for new subscribers; prices, trials and availability can vary by country, platform and eligibility (Apple’s 2026 season announcement).

A temporary one-month offer for eligible MLB fans in the United States and Canada ran through July 5, 2026; that promotion had expired by August 18.
Is Apple TV+ a good baseball choice?
| Viewer | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Casual fan seeking selected marquee games | Good | Weekly Friday doubleheaders provide a focused national package. |
| Household that also wants Apple originals | Good | The subscription includes entertainment beyond baseball. |
| Fan who prefers local announcers | Mixed | Apple supplies a distinct national production rather than the local television crew. |
| Fan who wants every MLB game | Poor fit alone | Friday Night Baseball is selected-game coverage, not a full-season replacement for a broader MLB package. |
| Viewer who dislikes traditional broadcast clutter | Potentially good | The minimalist graphics and reduced promotional clutter may be appealing. |
| Bar or restaurant | Use a commercial route | Apple identified DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS for commercial establishments in the United States. |
Common problems and practical fixes
- The game is missing: Check your country, the Apple TV app’s sports or live-content area, and the specific game’s rights.
- A login loop appears: Verify Apple Account credentials, subscription status, app version and device software.
- Your television is unsupported: Use a supported Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, console, browser or mobile device; an Apple TV 4K box is not required if another supported device is available.
- Video quality is poor: Test network stability and device or HDMI settings before assuming an Apple-wide outage.
- Your team is not scheduled: This package does not carry every team or every game.
- You expect native 4K: Do not assume it; the original debut reporting identified a 1080p stream.
The verdict on the 2022 headline
The debut deserved criticism for a rough streaming experience and commentary that often competed with the game. But “slaughtered” describes the online mood of one opening night, not the complete history of Apple’s MLB project. Apple refined distribution and production, kept the weekly package alive and was still presenting it in its fifth season in 2026.
