Fans throwing sex toys at WNBA games in 2025 was a real safety issue, not a harmless prank: objects interrupted play, came close to players and struck a spectator. The league said intentional throwers would be ejected, banned for at least one year and potentially arrested and prosecuted. The incidents resurfaced in August 2026, so the 2025 response was not necessarily the end of the story.
What happened at WNBA games
An Associated Press report published August 7, 2025, described objects thrown during games in Atlanta on July 29, Chicago on August 1, Los Angeles on August 5, and Chicago again later that week. The report also described attempts in New York and Phoenix that did not reach the court, as well as a separate attempt in Atlanta. In Los Angeles, one object nearly hit Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. In Phoenix, an object thrown toward spectators struck a person in the back. A Sporting News timeline published August 26, 2026, reported that incidents returned during August 2026 after a roughly year-long lull. The chronology has therefore continued beyond the first widely reported run of incidents, and any current tally should be tied to a clear date and definition of what counts. What the WNBA said would happen to throwers
The league said intentionally throwing objects onto the court or into seating areas creates safety risks for players, officials and fans. Its stated response was immediate ejection and a minimum one-year ban from WNBA arenas. Throwers could also face arrest and prosecution by local authorities. The Guardian, August 2, 2025
In a statement reported by the AP on August 7, 2025, the league said: “The safety of everyone in our arenas remains a top priority. We are working closely with local and federal law enforcement to pursue all appropriate actions — including arrest and prosecution with felony charges where applicable — against anyone engaged in this conduct or otherwise involved in sponsoring this reckless and unacceptable behavior.” The statement describes possible consequences; it does not mean every person involved was charged with a felony.

Arrests, charges and investigations
The AP reported arrests connected to incidents in Georgia and Arizona. In Georgia, reported charges included disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, public indecency and indecent exposure. The Arizona arrest followed an object striking a spectator. An arrest or charge is not a conviction, and the available reporting does not establish the outcome of every case. Why arena screening may not catch every object
Security screening is not identical at every venue. The AP quoted Ty Richmond, president of Allied Universal Security’s event-services division, saying the objects described generally did not contain metal and could be difficult for metal detectors to detect. He said more intensive checks can involve pat-downs, opening bags or prohibiting bags, while venues must also move spectators through entrances efficiently.

That explanation is about screening trade-offs, not proof that every arena has the same equipment or bag policy. A metal detector alone may not identify a nonmetal object, while stricter searches can affect entry procedures and fan experience. Associated Press, August 7, 2025

Players and coaches rejected the “prank” framing
After an object nearly hit her in Los Angeles, Cunningham questioned how the league could be taken seriously if such incidents continued. Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve linked the behavior to the sexualization of women and said it should not be treated as a joke.
“This has been going on for centuries, the sexualization of women. This is the latest version of that. It’s not funny. It should not be the butt of jokes.”

Why there is no definitive incident total
Published accounts vary in what they count: an object reaching the court, one thrown into seating, or an attempt stopped before it reached the playing area. The AP supplied dated locations rather than a single cumulative number, and the later timeline indicates the events were not confined to 2025. Any total without a defined scope and cutoff date risks mixing unlike incidents or becoming outdated.
