When The CW announced its next fall lineup, it introduced three new dramas. A May 21, 2009 Plain Dealer report described the dramas as “seemingly designed to boost the network’s appeal with young women.” That contemporary assessment offers context for the network’s changing programming mix; it does not establish that this strategy alone caused the cancellation.
How could an acclaimed show still be canceled?
Critical recognition and a network’s scheduling decision are different measures. The CW’s 2007 renewal announcement called Everybody Hates Chris critically acclaimed and cited Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, among other recognition. In that announcement, then-President of Entertainment Dawn Ostroff praised the creative team and cast, saying the series had “consistently proven itself to be one of the best comedies on television.” That was praise in a renewal announcement, not a ratings measurement or an explanation for the later cancellation.

The combination is not contradictory: acclaim and early audience success can coexist with declining reported averages in later seasons. Did Chris Rock decide to end the series?
That claim is not established by the reviewed sources. The distributor identifies Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi as the show’s creators, but the available material does not verify a public statement from Rock or another producer saying they chose to end the series. The documented event is that The CW canceled it.
