Neither account explains how the straps were physically supported: the material or construction that created the effect has not been confirmed in the reporting cited here.
What Blunt wore to the 2024 Oscars
At the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024, Blunt wore a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown from the house’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, designed under creative director Daniel Roseberry. Schiaparelli described it as a nude-sequin tank dress with baguette rhinestone inlays, a contrasting silver-sequin trompe-l’œil men’s boxer-short motif and a gathered train at the back. Schiaparelli’s official post identifies the house, designer, collection and garment details.
Vanity Fair described the gown as champagne-colored and beaded, with conspicuous midsection embellishment. Paster called that detail “the little underwear”; according to Vanity Fair’s account of Paster, the house had renamed it “The Emily” in Blunt’s honor. The official Schiaparelli description does not use that name. Vanity Fair’s report also says the final choice was made from three contenders during a last try-on on Oscars Sunday morning.
What the stylist said about the floating effect
Paster told Vanity Fair: “Sometimes we don’t play it safe. At this point of years of being with Emily, we can go have fun with fashion.” She also said: “Did I know that people were going to talk about the shoulder? Absolutely. Do I care what anybody else has to say? Absolutely not.”

Those comments explain the choice as intentional, not the garment’s mechanics. Paster said Blunt loved the dress and that it was the one that spoke to her. She predicted the floating-shoulder treatment would appear again, and said she was surprised Florence Pugh wore a similar detail on the same carpet. Paster also rejected an Oppenheimer connection: “Trust me, there’s nothing about this dress that says Oppenheimer.” Vanity Fair transcribed these remarks.
How were the straps held up?
Vogue reported that Blunt’s straps were meant to float and described a structured tank strap hovering above her body. It did not establish what materials or support made that effect possible; the reporting reviewed here does not confirm a hidden strap, wire, boning, adhesive or any other specific mechanism. Vogue’s account explicitly leaves the material behind Blunt’s floating straps uncertain.

A similar look on the same carpet offers a useful contrast, but not an answer about Blunt’s gown. Vogue reported that Florence Pugh’s Del Core Spring/Summer 2024 dress had a hidden second, conventional strap for support. That detail belongs to Pugh’s dress; it is not evidence of how Schiaparelli constructed Blunt’s.
Why the straps drew attention
The Independent recorded viewers asking, “Is anyone else as fascinated by Emily Blunt’s dress as I am?” and “Why won’t her straps sit on her shoulders?!” It also reported that Blunt later posted a video playing with the straps and moving her head to create an optical illusion. That visual play helps explain the fascination, but does not reveal the physical construction of the gown. The Independent’s March 13, 2024 report relayed the audience reaction and video context.

Other details reported about the look
Vanity Fair reported in 2024 that Blunt wore more than 100 carats of diamonds on Tiffany & Co. platinum necklaces, along with 6-carat diamond earrings. The report did not identify exact product names or model numbers, so these figures do not identify specific retail pieces. Vanity Fair also said Paster had worked with Blunt for 18 years at the time of publication; that is a 2024 figure, not a statement of their current working history.
