Released to the Associated Press on December 16, 2025, the tribute praised Rob Reiner’s range as a filmmaker and his generosity with actors and writers, while honoring Michele Reiner’s work for the public good.
What the shared tribute said
The Associated Press reported that the statement was released on December 16, 2025, two days after Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead at their home in Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood. AP published its account the following day. The remarks below belong to the group of signatories collectively.
The friends described the way Reiner’s films brought people together and singled out his versatility: “There is no other director who has his range.” They praised his comedic timing, attention to dialogue and skill in drama, adding: “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom.” The statement named A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride as examples of his work. Associated Press report and statement.
Why Billy Crystal’s connection to Reiner was personal
Crystal first met Reiner in 1975, when he appeared as a guest on All in the Family. Crystal later recalled Reiner telling him, “It was so much fun playing your best friend, why don’t we keep it going?” AP reported that Crystal watched Reiner grow from a comic actor into a master storyteller. Their shared history makes the tribute especially resonant, but the December statement itself remained a collective message.

The tribute remembered Michele Reiner, too
The statement honored Rob Reiner as a committed citizen and described Michele as his partner in work for the public good. It closed with a line from It’s a Wonderful Life: “Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” The statement followed it with: “You have no idea.” Its final message from the friends was: “We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”
