In a joint interview with his father, Martin Sheen, Estevez recalled that agents and managers urged him to use Sheen because it was already a recognized name in the entertainment industry. They encouraged him to benefit from the name his father had built.

Did Emilio Estevez ever use the name Emilio Sheen?
Estevez recalled that his first headshot had been printed with the name “Emilio Sheen.” The anecdote describes a suggested professional name, not a formal change followed by a change back. He said, “I thought, ‘That’s not me!’” His account supports the conclusion that he retained Estevez as his professional surname; it does not establish that he formally adopted Sheen.

What did Martin Sheen think of his decision?
Martin Sheen supported his son’s choice. In the joint interview, he said, “I was so proud of him, man. I begged him not to change it.” A later report also describes Martin as encouraging Emilio to keep his name.

The names reflect different professional choices within the family. The Guardian reported that Martin Sheen was born Ramón Estevez, used Sheen as his stage name, and had not officially changed his name. Emilio retained the family surname Estevez. His choice should not be described as changing back from Sheen.
Estevez also remarked in the interview, “It turned out that being Latino is pretty popular now.” That comment is part of his later reflection; it does not establish that ethnic representation was his original reason for keeping Estevez. His explanation centered on wanting to make his own way and not identifying with the proposed name.
