Masiela Lusha, born in Albania, played Carmen Lopez, George’s daughter on the ABC sitcom George Lopez. Lusha said her nationality was not discussed when she tested for Warner Bros. and ABC. The available accounts explain her experience of the audition, but do not reveal the private reasoning of George Lopez or the casting decision-makers.
What Masiela Lusha said about the casting
In a 2013 interview, Lusha recalled: “When I tested for Warner Bros. and ABC, my nationality was not even addressed in the room.” She also described Carmen as “such a well-written character, so rounded” and said the character’s “struggles and thrills were universal.” SitcomsOnline.com’s October 31, 2013 interview is the clearest first-person account of the question.
That statement describes what Lusha remembers happening during her test. It is not an official explanation from the producers or casting staff, and it does not establish what they privately considered when selecting her.
What is known about her audition and Carmen
A 2017 profile reports that Lusha auditioned for the sitcom while ill, received a callback, and felt the show was a natural fit. It also says the writers shaped Carmen around aspects of Lusha’s personality and interests, including her poetry. That account concerns how the character was developed after Lusha joined the show; it does not explain the initial casting decision. The Los Angeles Times High School Insider profile also quotes Lusha saying it was the first time she had auditioned for a sitcom.

In a separate interview, Lusha said showrunner Bruce Helford gave her freedom to portray Carmen with her own sense of honesty. That speaks to her approach to the role, not to the criteria used to cast it. Starry Mag’s interview with Lusha discusses that performance latitude.

Lusha’s birthplace and Carmen’s identity are distinct facts; being born in Albania does not, by itself, establish how Lusha identified or what the casting team sought. The evidence supports a straightforward account: she auditioned, received the role, and later recalled that nationality was not raised during her test. It does not support claims that the show deliberately sought a non-Latina actress, had a general policy of disregarding ethnicity, or selected Lusha for a specific appearance or trait.
