Elsa Pataky has said the move was not a simple choice between Spain and Australia: she and Chris Hemsworth had agreed not to pressure one another to live in their home country. A visit to Byron Bay changed her mind. She fell in love with its natural setting, while both spouses described wanting a more grounded, outdoor family life away from Los Angeles’s constant film-industry presence.
Why did Elsa Pataky choose Byron Bay?
Pataky initially resisted the idea that either she or Hemsworth should have to leave their home country for the other. As she put it in remarks quoted by PerthNow, “I made him promise that neither of us would force the other to live in their country, because they were so far apart.” Spain and Australia were both a long way from the other’s home.
The turning point was visiting Byron Bay with Hemsworth. “It ended up happening because he took me to Australia, he showed me Byron Bay, and I fell in love, it was a paradise,” she said in the account quoted by PerthNow. The appeal was not just the destination’s scenery: Pataky imagined a life surrounded by greenery, wildlife and animals.
What kind of childhood did Pataky want for their children?
In a direct interview with Beauticate, Pataky described wanting her children to grow up with more outdoor life than she had experienced. She grew up in an apartment and said she wanted them to be able to enjoy nature and animals.

The couple tried living in Byron Bay for about three months before, as Pataky recalled, they fell completely in love with it. She cited the ocean, a small-town community, greenery and tropical weather as elements that made the place feel right for family life. “I grew up in an apartment, surrounded by cars, so living here is like a dream for me,” she told Beauticate.
Why did Hemsworth want to leave Los Angeles?
Hemsworth offered a complementary explanation in a 2016 account reported by ABC News. He said that being constantly surrounded by the acting business could feel suffocating, and that he valued a community where conversations were not dominated by the entertainment industry.

He also contrasted the family’s suburban life in Los Angeles with the coastal farm setting in Australia. “We were living shoulder to shoulder in the suburbs and thought that’s not how we want our kids to grow up,” he said. He described moving to a farm-like setup on the Australian coast as “the best thing.” Those are Hemsworth’s stated preferences, not proof that one place is objectively better for raising children.
Did Pataky reject Spain?
No. Living in Australia does not mean Pataky has turned away from her Spanish roots. In a June 2025 interview with EL PAÍS, she spoke about wanting her children to experience Spanish traditions and spend short periods in Spain. Her account presents Australia as the family’s chosen home while keeping Spain part of the children’s lives.

Where does the family live now?
PerthNow and EL PAÍS described Byron Bay as the family’s home in 2025. Those reports establish what was reported then; they do not independently confirm the family’s location in 2026.
